Layla's POV

Things have been very strange lately. Ever since Eric told me how he felt, it's like I have been in the dark as to what to do.

A week has past since I kissed him out on the abandoned field. School resumed that Monday and he went right back to teasing me. I try not to let it bother me because I hope that he has a good reason as to why he is doing it.

A pair of hands clap together in front of my face and it brings me out of my daze. I look ahead to see Four staring back at me with raised eyebrows.

"Nod off?" He asks while taking a bite of a sandwich. I take a deep breath and look around the lunchroom towards Eric's table. He's laughing at something but he glances in my direction. His eyes dart to the back of Four's head before he sends me a pointed glare.

I return my gaze back to Four. "Where's Tris and Grant" I ask, changing the subject.

He shoves another large bite into his mouth before answering.

"Some chemistry project. Working through lunch." He licks his fingers one by one. Shoving the rest of his food aside, he rests his elbows on the table and interlocks his fingers. He looks at me, intently.

"Are you going to tell me what happened between you and Eric or am I going to have to figure it out on my own?" I can't help but smile at his words. Four would eventually figure things out, he has a way of getting information.

"It's complicated.." I mutter. He scoffs at me. "Of course it is! You're talking about Eric!" The way he laughs at me makes me feel like a chile and I hate it.

My fingers dig into my thighs under the table. Why am I so angry?

Four looks at me quizzically for a second, realizing he's upset me. He reaches across the table for my hand and I bring it from out under the table. His rough palm lays over mine and he gives me a small smile.

"Sorry."

Just then, a large figure appears behind Four. Dark blue eyes bore into our hands resting on the table and I immediately retreat my hand back from Four.

Four glances over his shoulder before rolling his eyes. "Can we help you with something, Eric?" He seethes.

Eric comes around and stands at the edge of the table and leans down, placing his palms on the grey surface. He looks between us closely with a growing smirk rising up on his lips.

"I was just wondering how your date was going. How would Tris feel about you holding hands with her best friend, Four?" Though his tone sounds sarcastic, I know that he's angry.

I shake my head and stand quickly, pulling Eric with me out of the lunchroom. I glance back at Four and he gives me a look of pity.

I can feel the eyes on us as we exit. As soon as we're out of sight, Eric grabs my arm roughly and turns me around to face him. His whole body is tense.
