There was just 8 seconds left, Rick- playing at point guard- ran the ball down the court as fast as he could and passed the ball with an ergent strength to his teammate Alex Smith, Smithy they called him, passed it back to him as if he didn't want the responsibily of taking the last shot as they were 45-46 down.
Roberts, at small forward, set a screen so Rick could take the winning shot without anyone in his way. He ran past the screen, and looked face first to the basket. It's height gave the impression that it was looking down on him. And although he had practised every possible senario, the pressure of the eyes uppon him and his team mates almost crossing their fingers with hope, got to him more than anything. But he forced himself to do it. He had to do it. He launched the ball towards the basket. It spun towards the hoop. Ricky's whole world felt like it had frozen as the basketball fell through the hoop withoud even touching the backboard or the rim. He had done it, people were running onto the court from every which way. Everybody was pushing him and cheering him. He never wanted this moment to end.
After the game the group of them where in the changing room; Ricky, John, Roberts, Smithy and Connor. Rick had known Connor ever he had been 8- the same with Jonathan. The rest of them where getting changed, ready to go home. But not Ricky. He was simply sitting in place. Thinking over and over of the events which had just occured.
"You ok?" Anthony Roberts asked.
"Yes yes I'm fine. I just never want this moment to end" Ricky replied, now feeling somewhat emmbaressed realizing his lack of movment.
"Well I'm going now so I'll see you next week." Rick not hearing this went back into a daze.
It was now just Ricky and John in the room. Rick was getting changed and Jonathan was packing his bag. Rick spotted as John clossed his bag, a beer can. Ricky came to the conclusion that John was going to a party. He often went to parties round houses or fields.
"Don't go drinking tonight" Ricky said, with a sigh.
"Why not?" John snapped back.
"Because it's not good for you" Rick replied.
"Well it's none of your business" after saying this, John stormmed out.
