Sam's POV -
Something was wrong. I could feel a little pull in my chest and the closer I got to the pack grounds, the stronger the pull became. I tried so hard to ignore it at first, thinking that it was the mate bond trying to bring me back. It wasn't until I reached the boundary of our lands that I realized just how wrong I had been.
I took off running as fast as I could. Twigs and leaves crackled under my feet as I maneuvered around the forest. The wind picked up viciously without notice and I squinted my eyes to keep the now flying debris from blinding me.
What the hell is happening?
The pull of Carter's fear and anger roared through my veins, pushing me to move faster. I leapt over a fallen tree and shifted into my Lycan- Sheriff - midair. Mentally thanking the Goddess for what ever reason it was that I held control of my feral beast.
My bones broke and elongated, my face cracking open as my jaw separated from it's holding place and my teeth jutting out to sharp points. By the time our body hit the ground again, we were now on two legs and stood our ground.
Our chest was heaving in deep breaths as we tried to strain our ears to hear anything. We weren't far from the pack house and the sound of cries and screams echoed through the trees around us. Sheriff took off at a full sprint, zig-zagging through the trees until we were at the edge of the clearing surrounding our home.
Our blood pounded in our ears as we took in everything that had happened. A deep black, swirling mist was spread out over the ground and my pack members were panicking as they tried to pull themselves from its grasp. Strange smelling men were standing all around as they watched with amusement as the wolves failed to escape.
"Who the hell are these fools?" Sheriff growled.
The physical tug in my gut nagged again. Carter's fear wrapped around my heart like a vice and I clenched my teeth hard.
"Whoever they are, this mistake will be their last." I growled back and moved to take a step out of my hiding place in the shadows of the tree line when Sheriff stopped me.
"Wait. Just wait."
"What are you talking about? Wait for what? We've waited long enough! Our pack was attacked and we weren't here to help! We left Carter-"
"With her mates! We left her with her goddess given, moon bound mates. She is not ours! She will never be ours, Sam." Sheriff snarls at me.
I let out an exasperated sigh. He's right, and I am well aware that she isn't nor would ever be mine, but I loved her. She didn't know that my heart was in her hands, she wasn't capable of returning my feelings. Feelings that had since dulled after meeting the eyes of our actual douchebag of a mate.
I hadn't cared that my mate was a male. It was confusing, sure. I had never looked at anyone of the same sex with lust before, but Sheriff and I were just happier than all hell to have felt the bond after waiting for so long. Only for Tyler to turn around and throw the bond back in our face.
My heart felt like it was torn from my chest and I couldn't breathe. I had to get away from everyone and think, and I couldn't do that on pack grounds. I didn't go far, only to Carter's Grandpa Jones' cabin but it was far enough removed that I felt safe until we decided it was time to face the music and return this evening.
"We can't just go tromping through whatever the hell that smoke is! We need to go about this with a level head. Stupid human."
This Goddess-damned Lycan is getting on my last nerve today. However right he might be. I looked back over the scene in front of us. The smoke holding everyone in place. I caught sight of Carter's moon-white wolf and the three enforcers behind her, who were currently bared down in front of one man. A rush of relief filled me. She was struggling to get out of the mists hold, but she was protected.
