RECAP

"Humans...they are born, they grow up and learn and discover... For me, it was different. I just...came into existence."

Ava nodded, eyes fastened on mine with rapt attention as I continued, "I didn't...exactly know what had happened. It was like I had...woken up, but I remembered nothing prior to it. I didn't quite understand until...the creator approached me, put his hand on my shoulder...and spoke the first words I ever heard."

     Ava's eyes grew rounder.

"He said...'welcome, little one, to the Aether'."

My Long Ago...

Herobrine's POV

Ava listened, patience endless, as I spilled out my beginnings to her. I told her how I learned to walk, how I was clothed in the garments of the immortals, given food and a place to rest...still overwhelmed by my sudden existence.

During my tale, it amazed me that she didn't even interrupt once, merely sitting, soft eyes fastened on my face.

     Eyes that held no judgment.

I must have talked for hours, not stopping even when my throat went dry. If I did not focus on this... I feared I would be dragged back into a dark and torturous nightmare; one I did not know would end.

"...they cared for me, taught me to read, to write and speak like them. I knew all of what they were working on, they spared no secrets from me... I knew very well that I was the result of a test, and yet I felt grateful for this life, blessed, even. I lived among them, grew into the person I thought they would want...but I could never stop my own mind from speaking doubts."

I grimaced, remembering how fearful I felt whenever such a thought came into my mind, "I was...afraid they would find out that I imagined myself as...weak and unworthy. Only a broken creation would have such doubts, so I hid my thoughts from them as well as I could..."

     "...I was—am... I am terrified of death..."

I couldn't help the humorless chuckle that forced its way from my chest from this admission, staring up at the dark, low ceiling of the cave I had sheltered us in.

I was afraid of death... I, who had given it so willingly to others, to innocents.

"Every day I became weighed down from this terror. Every day I struggled to act as I had the day before... Every day, I desperately tried to mold myself into what...what I thought they wanted. I had to be perfect to stay alive, I didn't want to become nothing again..."

I could feel Ava shift, heard her begin to rub one of her useless legs, doubtlessly aching from the cold. As soon as I was strong enough... I would deliver this innocent to a place she deserved, a place she no longer had to fear for her life...like I had.

"...The fears didn't stop when Notch made...another. His likeness was nearly identical to mine. His face, hair, his height—all of it matched mine almost exactly. This...this only made me all the more fearful."
