RECAP

"I-I don't need to eat."

"I didn't ask if you needed to," Damon's eyes were locked on mine, and I was once more reminded of how afraid humans had once been to look into my eyes.

And... I was reminded once more of the day he had torn me down and reunited Notch to this world.

I opened my mouth, submitting to being fed, hating the humiliation of it all.

The hunter fed me two bowls of the stuff, until he was satisfied. I would never admit it but... the stew had indeed warmed my body, and I knew the nutrients would increase my healing significantly. Not five minutes after I had eaten the last bites Damon offered, my head had fallen against the saddle behind me, my chin ducked in weariness. Sleep pressed upon me, making my thoughts and plans appear as muddled half-dreams to me.

Perhaps, when I next woke... I would be ready to flee.

HEROBRINE'S POV

I was able to sit properly astride my assigned horse when I next woke.

Before the sun had graced the horizon, the hunters had already begun to pack and move out, flinging snow upon their fires as they joked of the frigid weather with one another. Indeed, it was eerie how many of them smiled as I watched from where I lay. It was as if they had never feared my presence... no longer could I boast of cowing all who stood against me.

Despite noting my alertness, Damon had persuaded the dark-feathered valkyrie to preserve the remaining potions. It was strange, being so sharp in mind among them, able to watch and listen and contemplate as they murmured to one another of what awaited them at the end of this trek. Of course, such coherence meant my pain went undimmed, I felt sharpness lancing through every limb every time my mount took a step, and my every breath was laced with struggle and pain.

However... it was better than being incoherent, far better. Now, my mind was allowed to wander and focus elsewhere, rather than bathing in an endless wave of aches.

It is deserved.

Your pain... will be your atonement.

I scowled, struggling to focus on something other than that accusatory voice echoing within my mind. A laugh from far above caught my attention, and my gaze flicked to where a pair of Valkyries dove and circled far above, gliding on frigid winds with their powerful wings. The sight induced a different sort of pang in my chest, one that spoke of a wound my body could not heal.

Merciless

Disgraced

Fallen

Unwanted

A horse drew up beside mine, catching my eye, dismissing my thoughts. I turned a little, scowling when my eyes met with Damon's. Of course the human would choose such a time to prod my patience.
