RECAP

My eyes locked with another man's. He was tall, his head shaven, and a black beard framed his mouth. Dark eyes filled with...concern...bored into my own. His form radiated power, it far outlasted my own, and caused dread and crushing guilt to fill my mind, my very soul.

          He...was so familiar...

A searing headache seemed to split my head in two, and then all sight vanished from me as I swept Ava and myself away from the fortress, landing in a cool, dark cave.

I immediately twisted, feeling my legs give out, forcing myself to land on my back so as not to crush Ava. She yelped, but I barely heard it as a static noise filled my ears, forcing my eyes shut. Ava's panicked voice, sounding as though coming from behind a door, reached me only moments before I blacked out.

          And then...the visions began.

Shattered Memories

Far away, underground in a cave with no entrance...

HEROBRINE'S POV

I was asleep...and yet all the sensations my body felt screamed that I was awake. I heard tall grass brush my legs as it waved in the warm breeze caressing my skin. Vast stretches of impossibly bright grassland stretched before me, all rippling with life. Dotted in the grass were strange trees, under which wandered animals I had never seen before...and yet...I knew exactly what they were.

The sky above me was a rich blue, and the sun seemed to hang still in the sky, glowing with a pure, warm yellow. In the distance was a massive building of white stone, with pillars stretching taller than the trees.

          This place...I knew this place...

The answer flashed upon me in an instant, and it rocked me, so I nearly fell.

It was the place...the place of my birth...my creation...

A warm hand settled on my shoulder, and I jumped, glancing down at it. Oh...that's right...

The hand turned me, and I found myself face-to-face with the man that had appeared in the Fortress...only now did I realize he was no mere man.

Dark eyes bored into my own, holding me still with their intensity. His dark brows creased a little when he caught sight of my eyes, and a feeling of insignificance, of guilt and fear, washed over me. No...that wasn't right...I should have felt nothing...I remember now, I should be feeling nothing!

The man murmured, "Strange...", his deep voice banishing all feeling away, drawing me back into this memory. However, he smiled, the black beard framing his mouth waving gently in the breeze when he noticed my expression, "Worry not, young one...I will explain what happened soon enough."
