RECAP

SAWYER HAYE'S POV

I almost sighed with relief when those white eyes turned to the young woman, rubbing the back of my head uncomfortably.

      Ah, Notch... why me.

"...thank you, Ava. I will return when I can."

"M-mhm... Don't get too beat up th's time... I won't be there t' stop the bleedin'."

      "Worry not for me... farewell."

I watched, wide-eyed as the demon strode past me, out into the wintery night. I pulled the door shut after him, leaned against the wall beside the door, and slid down into a heap.

Good Notch that had just happened... and now I was babysittin'?

"...Notch above." I muttered, jumping when the woman replied.

      "He's... pretty scary, sorry."

"Nah, nah I... 's fine, bit o' excitement... Ye hungry?"

      "Extremely."

"Alright, I'll get somethin', but sometimes th' food 'round here disappears, be careful."

The One He Spared

AVA WOODS POV

"Sawyer Hayes, you are royally f####ed..." my host muttered this phrase to himself every time I had to ask for something. It only made me giggle awkwardly, repeatedly promising I'd tell Herobrine that I'd been treated with the best hospitality ever. Hearing me say the dreaded name only made the man flinch, however.

This new utterance was the result of me growing too cold, and Hayes was hurriedly shuffling around the logs in his wood stove, making fresh heat waft through the house.

It had been nearly... five days of silence, now. Five days of no return, not a single word from the powerful demon who had dropped me off in the care of a stranger.

Hayes had been very kind, very respectful. He almost treated me like foreign royalty... in an awkward, unsure sort of way.

     "Ey, miss."

My attention flicked back to Hayes, snapping away from thoughts that had begun to wander towards Herobrine's wellbeing.

The man was sitting back from the stove now, brushing soot-streaked hands over rough work pants, "I uh... There's been a question naggin' me for awhile 'bout the thing who dropped you here."

I blinked, shifting to spread my hands towards the fire, "Oh... ask away. 'S no secret."

His green eyes darted from my face to the frost-covered window, and he raked a hand through his hair, staining it with soot. I wish he weren't so nervous around me all the time...

"Yer uh... What's your history with him? I thought he bloody murdered every person he saw."

Images of my village burning, of the sword ripping through my spine rose in my mind. They were soon replaced by the winters I starved through, the nightmares that haunted my sleep, and reminders of how my hands bled to feed my dying body. Memories of the spiders dragging me away, then of white eyes flashing before my face as everything faded...

     "It's... it's a long story," I murmured, "There's... a lot even I don't get."

I was met with Hayes's lopsided grin, "Well... we got all winter t' hear it eh?"

His cheeriness was infectious, and I couldn't stop myself from returning the smile.

     "Ah... I suppose we do."

     I shifted, wincing a little.

"It... happened when I was almost too young to remember..."

The story lasted well into the night and the next day. I was surprised at how much emotion Hayes showed through it. Things I was trying to rush through telling would make him raise a hand, imploring me to pause my rants so he could fully understand what in the blue Nether I was saying. By the end of it all, he seemed quite a bit more at ease around me, now understanding a little bit more about this stranger he now cared for.

"You said he's runnin' from Notch Hisself, now?"

I nodded over my bowl of porridge, "He's... scared of being rejected by his creator..."

A soft scoff, "Well, if anyone could run from Notch, he could. That b#stard could level mountains 'n dry up seas with a wave of his hand."

I shrugged, blowing a bit over the hot porridge, "I haven't seen him dry up a sea yet."

"Bet he could drink it all in one sittin'."

     I couldn't suppress my grin, "M-maybe."

Hayes offered me a slice of fruit, and we both ate in silence.

      Herobrine... where are you?
