"Are you, hurt? Do you need food?" Nirvana starts fussing over the little girl.
She couldn't be over the age of six. Her long blonde hair has been put into a Katniss braid that sweeps over her shoulder. She has a red dress on and a locket around her neck. When we found her she was fighting back to a ticker that was attacking her. She stabbed it in the head in one swift motion like she had done it a million times before.
"I'm fine, I have a hideout anyway," the little girls says in her sweet, soft voice.
"A hideout huh? Do you want to show us?" I ask in the friendliest voice I can manage.
"Are you baddies?"
"No way, we don't like the baddies and the baddies don't like us."
"Pinkie swear?"
"Pinkie swear," I say intertwining my pinkie finger with hers.
We follow her along the concrete tube, like the one we came through.
"It's behind here," she says pulling a box away from the wall.
"I can't fit through there," Trevor says.
"You don't need to, walk a bit further and on the same side there's a door, wait there and I'll open it," she says this as though we are idiots.
"Can you open it yourself?"
"Yeah, I'm as strong as the hulk!" She yells crawling through the small opening.
We laugh at that as we walk to the door. I don't see it until it inches open.
"Wow, you are are strong as the hulk," Dad compliments.
"Duh! Well hurry up! I don't want other people knowing about this place."
We file through the door and follow the little girl.
"See! Lots of food!"
She's right, she has cookies, lollies, fizzy, crackers and lots more. She has a sleeping bag laid out on the floor, with a pillow and two blankets.
"Where did you get all of this from?" I ask curious.
"Me and Mum were going camping when the infection started. So we brought all of our stuff down here, and we thought we were safe. But when she went back to get a few more things, she never came back."
"Oh, I'm so sorry little duck."
"That's what Mum calls me."
"Well what's your name?"
"Tegan."
"Tegan, that's a beautiful name," I say.
"A beautiful name for a beautiful girl," Trevor adds.
This brings a smile to her adorable little face.
"How old are you Tegan?" Paisley asks.
"I'm six!"
I was right! Six!
"Do want any food?" She asks.
"That would be lovely, what can we have?" Nirvana asks.
"Sit over there and I'll get it ready."
"Can I help?" I ask.
"If you want."
"I do."
Tegan and me open a packet of chips, some biscuits and we get out three cans of Arizona tea, and three cans of Pepsi.
"It's ready!" She yelps in her high pitched voice.
"Wow! This looks amazing girls!" Trevor says wrapping his arm around my shoulders and kissing the side of my forehead.
"Do you two date?"
"Yeah, I guess we do."
"You shouldn't guess, she's too pretty to kiss and not date!"
I burst into a laughing fit because (a) I'm hardly pretty, and (b) the way she said it was too cute.
"She is pretty isn't she?"
"She's the prettiest person I've seen after you, Tegan," Paisley says sweetly.
"I know right?!" Tegan says confidently.
"Come on, we should eat before we starve."
As soon as I say this it's like the Hunger Games and the food is the weapons in the Cornucopia.
As I'm taking a big gulp of Arizona Tegan comes over to me and asks, "what's your name? I haven't asked yet."
"I'm Jamila."
"What's everyone else's names?"
"Okay, so my boyfriend's name is Trevor, my best friend's name is Paisley, Paisley's Mum's name is Nirvana, and my Dad's name is Joey."
"You all have really cool names!"
"We do don't we, but so do you."
"I don't like my name."
"Why not? It's a beautiful name."
"But MY best friend's name is Tegan too."
"Oh, so you want a name all to yourself?"
"Yeah."
"So if you could choose any name, what would it be?"
"Emily, I don't know anyone who's name is Emily."
"Neither do I, but I prefer Tegan."
"Hey Tegan, it's time to get some sleep." Nirvana calls over.
"Okay, I'm coming," she answers back, but first she pulls me down and kisses me on the cheek goodnight.
"Good night Tegan, have a good sleep."
She skips to her sleeping bag and Nirvana tucks her in. The rest of us go to sleep shortly after.
