Ansel's POV
As I open my eyes,
I feel something stir beside me.
What the--
I look and see
Something worth more than a day of school.
I see the clock.
To heck with it.
Wishing my phone was closer
To be able to capture the moment,
I stare at the utter beauty before me.
My beautiful Rosaline
Is curled into my side.
Her hands on my chest
And her hair spewing out
All over the pillows.
Her eyes flutter
Slightly,
Probably dreaming.
Her lips are sweet
And her peacefulness
Is even richer.
A cupcake.
That's the thing
I think of.
A cupcake.
My beautiful Rosaline is undoubtedly
A rose,
A butterfly,
And...
A cupcake.
My arm that is underneath her head
Twitches slightly,
And I catch a handful of her hair.
As soft as silk.
I've said it probably a million times before
But...
How can someone be so beautiful and not know it?
As I lean closer,
I kiss her forehead
And she stirs slightly,
Whispering something
Indistinct.
I wonder what she thinks of me
But then bat it down
With the knowing that she's here
In my arms now.
I guess we fell asleep sometime
During the conversation.
Hearing and feeling
Her tears,
How utterly awful
It was.
But, I'm glad it was me
Instead of somebody else.
All of the sudden,
Yanking me out of my train
Of thoughts,
My cupcake sits up and searches for a clock.
She sighs
Defeated.
I grab her hand,
And she frowns down at me.
Sitting up on my elbow,
I smile at her
And receive a smile back.
"Good morning, beautiful,"
I whisper.
She yawns and wraps her arms
Around my neck.
"Good morning, Prince Charming."
I chuckle and fall back
With her.
She snuggles into me
And says, "We're not making it to school, are we?"
I shake my head.
"Nope. I have something better for us to do."
She smiles and looks deep into my eyes.
"Right now though, I'm kind of wanting that kiss," I whisper.
My beautiful Rosaline gives me a playful smile.
"What kiss?" She questions.
I tilt my head playfully.
She scoffs in pretend.
"I do not think I deemed you kisser of me."
I laugh.
"Kisser of you?"
She giggles and opens her eyes to mine.
I wish I could wake up to this every single morning.
"Shut up. It's early."
Not standing it any longer,
I kiss her forehead.
"It's 10."
She kisses my jawline.
"Too early," she says happily.
Rolling my eyes,
I whisper, "Can I please kiss you?"
My cupcake
Who has melty, gooey
Insides
Playfully says, "Hmmm. Let me think about it."
With my eyebrows knitted together,
I wrap my fingers in her wavy hair.
"I guess so," she says,
Staring me dead in the eyes.
I lean in to where our lips graze each other's
As I talk.
"I love you, sweetheart."
She lets out a small laugh.
"I love you, darling."
Then, I kiss her
Softly but deeply.
When I pull away,
I see her eyes are full of happiness.
Her lips form a pink smile,
And her hands tangle into my hair.
"What are we doing today, Ansel?"
I scrunch up my nose.
"I'm not telling."
She chuckles and lies down,
Closing her eyes.
I close mine,
But they immediately pop open
Because my door swings open,
And my mom screams.
Oh. Crap.
***
My mom runs her hands
Frantically
Through her hair.
My beautiful Rosaline is sitting
In the living room.
I am in my room with my mom.
She paces,
And I'm starting to find it annoying.
"Mom, please stop,"
I say.
She pauses
And gives me a look
Of utter disbelief.
"How could you--
Why is she--
What the flip happened?!"
Her voice is elevated,
Which makes me lower mine.
"I asked her to come over
Because something happened at school."
She frowns and stares.
"What happened?"
She askes quietly.
I take a deep breath.
I don't think telling her the truth
In this matter would be safe.
"She was being bullied,
And I..."
I trail off
And look down
At my feet.
They're buried under
The fluffy carpet.
I wish I could hide like my toes are.
But I can't.
I promise,
If not in words
Than in my heart,
That I would keep my beautiful Rosaline
Out of harm's way
As much as I could.
I feel ny bed stoop some.
Mom lays a hand on my back.
"Nothing happened?"
She asks.
I feel somewhat ashamed.
"No, Mom. You and I talked about Rosa.
We just... we're friends, okay?"
Friends who love
And admire
And cherish
One another's presence.
"Okay. Then, take her out to lunch and treat her like a princess."
Mom kisses my forehead and walks out.
At least my beautiful Rosaline's safe.
***
Sitting in a fancy restaurant,
My beautiful Rosaline stares over at me.
"I can't let you buy me dinner. It's flippin' too expensive."
She's been a little quiet
Since my mom told
Us that we could have some money
For lunch/dinner.
I was a little surprised
But still immensely happy
Nonetheless.
Our waiter came over
And kept staring at Rosa.
So I reached over and grabbed her hand.
The guy look at me
And glared.
What? She's mine.
The boy backed off some
But kept sneaking glances.
We ordered and ate our food.
"Dessert," I declared.
My beautiful Rosaline smiled
And looked at me through her long eyelashes.
"Dessert," she says.
I promise...
I fall in love with her every time I look at her
And she knows it...
I hope.
We order hot fudge cakes
And get them quickly.
As the boy walks,
He stares at Rosa,
And Rosa gives him a confused look.
I give her an assuring look.
What is this dude's problem?!
My beautiful Rosaline lifts her hands
As the boy sets down her plate.
Somehow,
Hot fudge is spilled onto her arm,
And she takes in a breath.
The boy stutters
And picks up napkins to wipe it off.
I hand him more
But it's not that much.
Just on her hand and wrist.
She starts to laugh
And the boy finally finishes
Saying, "Would you consider going on a date with me?"
I sit baffled
And I'm even more bewildered
When he pushes some hair out of her face.
How the--
Starting to stand
And knock the lights out of this guy,
My beautiful Rosaline looks at me and says, "I'm good, baby. I'll handle this."
I stay standing still,
Towering over this munchkin
Who is hitting on my girlfriend.
She smiles playfully and looks at him.
I see anger marking pieces of her eyes.
What's she doing?
I need to bash this guy's face in!
She says, "Well-- J, come closer. I need to tell you something."
He moves in slowly
Turning back to look at me once.
Suddenly,
My beautiful Rosaline's face changes
And she says, "I have a boyfriend, dirtbag."
She reels her arm back and punches J right in the face,
Throwing him backwards.
He stumbles to the floor,
And my cupcake shakes out her fist,
Laughing.
Quickly, I throw my money on the table
And take her hand.
"I love you so much," I say.
Adrenaline pumping through us.
"Let's go!" I yell.
Laughing,
We run out...
Free.
I stop her as soon as we're out of the restaurant.
She's so alive.
She's so beautiful.
I catch her face in my hands.
"I love you too, Ansel,"
She whispers.
And that's when our lips meet,
Securing our feeling for one another.
Our love.
My love.
My cupcake.
My home.
