Freedom... How Sweet.

When I got home,
Hank was nowhere to be seen.
I hopped in the shower
And then dressed in my pj's.
My smile was continually growing
As I thought of everything
That happened today.
When I picked up my brush
On my vanity,
I heard a chuckle.
Jumping out of my skin,
My body threw itself into the desk.
"So you were with him for dinner?"
His voice says,
But beneath the words
Is the meaning, "so you were with someone I don't know?"
I swallow hard
And blink back my fear.
Ansel's just over there.
Your window is open.
He'll hear you.
Be brave.
Sometimes,
In moments like these,
I wonder if Mommy meant
A different life for me.
I highly think so...
"Who is he?"
A raspy chuckle comes out,
And he stands.
My knees weaken,
And I grip my pen.
"You know. That boy you spend time with."
His voice is rising
As well as his anger.
From 10 feet away,
I smell the alcohol.
God, please help me.
Then I remeber my grandma
Sent me a letter addressed
To me as if it was from school.
Hank has nothing on me.
My grandma has custody of me...
Right this moment.
God really does answer prayers.
I stand taller.
"Oh, we just have Biology together."
He nods.
His eyes fill with rage,
Burning as if they're fire themselves.
"You know what? I'll believe you for now."
His smile is evil itself.
All of the sudden,
The doorbell rings.
He turns and spits,
Walking slowly towards the door.
Quickly,
I grab my bag full of mine and Mommy's memories.
I jam a few clothes,
My stash of important papers,
And finally all my pictures.
The duffle bag bulges,
And I throw all of it out the window.
Bye, Hank.
I whisper into the night air
Before jumping out.
I'm not yours anymore.
