"Their roast beef is good, isn't it?"

Takamichi handed me a plate with the same amount of beef on it.

"No, I'm not going to be able to eat this much. A buffet party is not a place to gorge yourself."

"If it weren't for my wife's family, I wouldn't have the opportunity to come to such a grand party. Besides, I have to eat while I can because I'll be warned if my wife is with me. If you don't want it, give me half."

Takamichi took a bite of the roast beef from my plate and looked pleased with himself. I thought it would be better to avoid this kind of behavior, since our position comes with the title of ex-fiancee. I thought about it, but as I looked at Takamichi with a big smile on his face, I felt that it was okay.

"I've been thinking, Wakaba's parents must have been very virtuous monks in a previous life."

"What, all of a sudden?"

"No, because the soulmates are really valuable. All the soulmates in my neighborhood are related to the Suzunari family, and as far as I know, the Suzunari family is the only family that has had two generations of soulmates. I sincerely believe that the good deeds of Mr. Suzunari in his previous life have spread good fortune not only to him but also to the people around him."

Now that you mention it, it's true that I've met my soulmate at an unusual rate around me. My parents and I, Raizo-san, Ren, Takamichi and his wife. I've heard that higher level alphas are better at bringing good luck, but that doesn't mean that all higher level alphas get their soulmate, and with all due respect to Takamichi, he's a medium level alpha.

"The two of us, Wakaba and I, had a fork in the road at the very last minute on the day of our wedding, and I can't help but feel that some unexplainable force other than coincidence was at work."

"You're not that religious, are you? Be careful you don't get suckered into buying a lucky jar or something."

"Don't be rude, I'm a man of means. I'd rather buy my wife a ring than buy something like that."

It had been a while since I had had a conversation with Takamichi, and it was fun as we are back in college. Thinking about it, Takamichi was an Alpha, but he was also a good friend to me as an Omega, and he was able to show concern for the older generation. Takamichi was the only Alpha friend I had in elementary, junior high, high school and college. Even though the relationship broke up, I still think it was a good decision and I am proud of myself for choosing Takamichi.

"So, how's married life?"

"That. I know I'm going to be accused of being extravagant for saying this, but the soulmate may be a difficult person to find, but the rest of our chemistry isn't exactly perfect."

"You seem to be doing well."

Takamichi chewed on his fifth piece of roast beef, looking distantly at what he was remembering.

"When you're raised differently like us, it wasn't half as hard to get together as it was to get along. If it looks like we're doing well, it's definitely due to our daily efforts. It's only in fairy tales that people get married and live happily ever after."

"What's that? I'm really curious about that."

I put down my plate and took a stance to listen to him. Takamichi gave me an air of seniority, saying, "As a senior who got married before you, I'd like to give some advice to Wakaba, who is about to start her life with a partner.
I was busy apologizing to all the parties involved, greeting my wife's parents and other relatives, and company officials for the first six months after I mated, and we didn't have time to decide on a new house, so we lived separately."
