Kylie
Sitting on the grass, our feet in the water, it's so peaceful here and so sweet of David to bring me here. We might not be saying anything, but it wasn't an uncomfortable silence. I stare at my feet, making ripples in the water. I've always found water calming. I look at David to find him looking at me.
"I can see why you like it here so peaceful,"
"This was my getaway when I could, you know."
"Yes, I know, so what would you like to know about me?" I sit there thinking it's not like I've done this before
"Do you have any brothers or sisters?"
"No, I'm an only child, but the guys are like my brothers. we have known each other since we were kids, and I'd do anything for them."
"That's nice to have somebody there for you,"
"I'm from New York well we all are It's always busy there we wanted some peace so we talked about it and our business we had to sort out, I mean security is needed everywhere so after very long discussions we thought it's what we all wanted so we did it and here we are. We still have a business in New York as well, but we opened an office here to I was the last one to come down. I made sure everything was ok in New York first."
"Are your parents in New York?"
"Not any more they brought a farmhouse in the country they wanted some peace too," he laughs.
I liked hearing him laughing I looked into his green eyes his hand came up on my cheek he leaned forward I was so nervous I've never been kissed before so I was surprised when he kissed my forehead. I can feel my face heat up and look at the water.
"What's your mom and dad like?"
"My mom is a wonderful woman she loves to cook she's always making something she's very caring, fusses over all of us, and knows how to handle my dad," he laughs. "My Dad is great he's caring, hardworking, and loves my mom to bits growing up he said "Boy I only have a few things I want you to remember in life ,never hit a woman and when you find a good woman like I did your mother treat her like a queen".
"Wow, that's lovely,"
"My parents are my role model they have been married twenty-five years .One day, I hope to find what they have. Kylie, why does your mom treat you so bad? you don't have to answer if you don't want"
"I have no idea. I really don't. I wish I knew myself,"
"What about your Dad?"
"I don't know him either. I never met him, me and Katie are not full sisters, and I never asked. I just tried to get through one day to another."
"I understand that," David says
"Is there anything you want from that house?"
"No, how sad is that I never had anything that meant anything to me"
"So I noticed you brought a book. What sort of stories do you like?"I blush. I can feel it
"Romance"
"We will have to go to some bookstores soon!"
"That would be great." I smile at him. We sit there for a while my hands are at my sides on the grass then a warm hand takes hold of mine and intwines our fingers we must have been there a few hours then we hear a whistle. I turn round and see a dog coming towards us. The dog comes running up to me. I stroke its fur it was so soft a man and woman appeared.
"I'm sorry dear max come here you little devil"
"It's ok. I love dogs. I hope you don't mind me stroking him,"
"Of course not dear, he loves fuss." After a couple of minutes, we say goodbye.
"Are you hungry?"
"A little"
"There's a cafe not too far from here. I thought we could get a bite if you feel up to it."
"Sounds good" we take our feet out the water put our shoes on I stand up brush my jeans down he takes my hand and we start to walk back, we are walking along the path I'm not really paying attention to where we are going all of a sudden I hear my name being called I stop look up. Shit I've not been paying attention. we are outside my old home. My mother and Katie are with some of her friends in the front garden.
"Well well what do we have here if it's not the fat cow and her hero I thought he would of got board of you by now, have you spread your legs yet for all of them?" I keep quite this was such a good day now this, is this a reminder that I'm not supposed to be happy. the neighbours were in the garden. I looked at them, and they were shaking their heads.
"Cathy," my old neighbour says, " Just leave her alone, will ya."
"I'll talk to that fat cow. However, I want to mind your own business."
David was mad "who the fuck are you to talk about spreading legs you dirty old cow your just jealous of kylie she is beautiful while you are a just a bitter old bitch kylie has somebody that wants her, your probably just wanted to scratch an itch for a man, you think treating your daughter like this is right shut the fuck up nobody wants to hear your annoying voice."
"How dare you you don't know what she has done to me!"
"What's that, huh?" David says "oh I know kylie paid your bills looked after your kid, brought you vodka, worked in a shit hole cause of you, cooked and cleaned you should be ashamed of yourself and so should her father for leaving her with you."
"Don't you fucking dare talk about her father you bastard." I was standing there I was ashamed this woman was my mother ashamed the neighbours were listening ,David was saying what I wanted to say I looked at David and smiled nobody ever stood up like this for me before, he leans down.
"I hope I've not upset you"
"No you haven't thank you for looking out for me" We go to walk away but then my mother screeches something that had me stopping in my tracks.
"You killed your father!" I turn around
"What are you talking about?" I ask
"You heard me you bitch you fucking killed your father the only man I ever loved you want to know why I hate you I'll tell you, I was pregnant with you eight months I was craving ice cream fucking ice cream I never liked that stuff, your father said he would go get me some it had been snowing he hit black ice the car went down a hill crashed into a tree. I got to the hospital went to him he looked at me and told me to look after our baby then he took his last breath and died, if I hadn't been pregnant with you I wouldn't of wanted ice cream and he would be here with me now, I would of aborted you if I could of after your father died I never wanted you I wish I never had you".
I finally find out along with the neighbours why I have always been hated. The tears are streaming down my face
"I'm so sorry, baby, about your father," David says. Then I notice a few bags at the side of the road, my stuff, Cathy notices
"Yes, all your stuff is out of my house when they get fed up with you. Don't come back here," she turns away, and I find my voice
"You were never my mother, and my father would be ashamed of you. David, can we go, please?"
"Sure baby," we walk along. Cathy is still screaming and shouting Mrs Morris, a neighbour calls my name
"Hello Mrs Morris,"
"I'm sorry dear I should never should of listened to your mo-cathy she said you hated everyone and kept your head down cause you never wanted to speak I am ashamed of myself kylie you have turned into a fine girl and have a good man by your side" David squeezes my hand I smile at him.
"Your father would have been proud of you,"
"You knew my father?"
"I sure did," she smiles
"What was his name?"
"Toby Toby Harris and he would have loved you." I don't notice my tears until David wipes under my eyes.
"Mrs Morris, my name is David. I think it's best if I get kylie home. Maybe you could come by sometime and talk. I don't suppose you have a picture of Toby, do you"
"I do. Yes, I'll have to look for some he was best-friends with my son Darren. When I find them, I'll let you know."
David took a business card out and a pen and wrote his address and phone number on, then handed it to Mrs Morris
"Thank you, dear.
