Season 1, episode 2

Evelyn smiled at the barista as she handed her her coffee, thanking her she handed her the money before heading to the door. As her hand went to the handle, the door swung open and a man came rushing in, clearly seeking shelter from the outside rain, bumping into her and causing her to drop her coffee, some of the drink spilling onto her shirt. She winced at the feeling of the hot drink slightly burning her skin and let out a hiss of pain.

"Oh." The man looked down at her in shock, "I'm sorry."

"It's fine." She picked up her empty cup, placing it in the bin that was conveniently next to her, "not like I wanted it anyway." She snarkily muttered under her breath.

If the man has heard her previous comment he ignored it, handing her some napkins, he asked. "Let me buy you a new one. What were you drinking?"

"A mocha." She informed him, "thank you."

"I'm sorry, I didn't see you." He apologised yet again. Evelyn wanted to be annoyed but there was something about his smile that was warm and filled with comfort. She hated that.

She nodded, "really, it's fine." She held out her hand, "I'm Evelyn, uh Sloan."

He took her hand and shook it, "Im Jackson Avery."

"Nice to meet you." She smiled at him, as he placed an order in with the barista.

As Jackson was about to say something, another man came into the door and ran up to him. "Jackson, we'll be late for rounds."

"Just let me get my coffee." Jackson crossed his arms.

"I don't understand why you have to get coffee here? There are so many coffee shops closer to the hospital." His friend continued.

"Hospital? Are you a doctor?" Evelyn questioned him.

"Yeah, we're surgical interns." Jackson nodded, as his friend looked confused; he hadn't noticed the small blonde woman talking to his friend.

"So am I, I'm at Seattle Grace." Evelyn took her mocha from the barista.

"Mercy west." Jackson informed her.

"Hi, I'm Charles." The other man introduced himself to her.

"Evelyn." She shook his hand.

"Don't I know you from somewhere?" Charles asked her.

"Yeah, you probably do." Evelyn nodded, she might aswell just tell him. She wasn't embarrassed, in fact she was very proud she managed to win Miss New York, it's just the way people reacted afterwards that made her uncomfortable. "I won the Miss New York pageant, a few years ago."

"I knew it." Charles smiled, Jackson looked at him in confusion.

"You watch pageants?" Jackson asked him.

"No I-" Charles' face went red causing both Evelyn and Jackson to laugh.

Evelyn glanced at the clock on the wall, "I gotta run, but it was lovely meeting you both." She waved at them before running out the cafe, time for work.

As Evelyn changed into her scrubs she heard George's voice behind her, "Meredith is looking for roommates."

"She is?" Evelyn asked, "I need to go find her." She began to run out of the room before stopping, "Thanks George!"

"Meredith!" Evelyn called out, "please can I be your roommate?
