Up

I wake up to a blinding bright white light in my eyes. I squeeze my eye shut in pain and blink a few times to adjust my eyes to the sudden change from the darkness I was in before. My left eye hurts worse than Hell, I can't even see from it. I don't know why I'm not screaming. A nurse in a light blue uniform walks up to me.

"Are you OK, honey?" she asks me. How am I here, wherever "here" is? WHY am I here? I try to nod, but my neck is so stiff it almost hurts. I feel tears well up in my eyes.

"Wh-where am I?!" I croak.

"Shhhh, shhh, it's alright, you're in hospital right now, you just had a bit of a bad injury, but you're OK now. My name is Nurse Ella, and I'm going to help you get better, kay?

We gave you some painkillers, and when you feel better, some nice police officers would like to know what happened, so that they can sort it out and make sure that it doesn't happen again, alright? There are some unusual virus readings in your eye socket, it's unlike anything we've actually seen before, to be honest(!) We don't even know what to make of it, as the antivirus doesn't even seem to work on it!" she nervously chuckled.

How am I supposed to tell the police anything?! I don't even know what happened myself.

I sniffled, and I rubbed my aching wire-clad arm across my face to try to hide my crying. Sensei Wu said to cover your emotions, even if you're devastated or in agony about something around people who you don't know. This was so that they couldn't take advantage of you, he explained. I noticed something hard and plasticky covering my left eye.

"Wait, I lost my eye?! Who took it!? Miss, what did you do to my eye?!" I panicked. Suddenly, it was hard to breathe. My chest tightened, my heart felt like it was going to explode.

"Oh, it's ok, calm down, ok? Just breathe slowly, in and out, that's it, calm down... I'm going to get some more painkillers, ok? Just wait a minute."

Usually, I was quite good at disguising how I felt, but today, I feel ... like I just can't cover it up. To be honest, I guess that whatever happened to me on Seaside was THE scariest thing that has happened to me, and all I remember about going somewhere was getting dragged onto something noisy, then I think that I was going up into the air somewhere and my arm feeling a tiny prick before becoming fully trapped in the darkness, but it hurt so much more back then that I might have just been imagining it, and this whole thing may actually be a dream, but who knows? My head hurts too much for me to be able to think properly now.

Here the lady comes back with something sharp. "Here, this might hurt a tiny twinge, but only for a second." I don't feel anything.

"There! All done. That injection didn't hurt too much, did it?" she asks. I somewhat shake my head. I say, "Not at all."

"Huh. Weird. Loads of other kids here who get painkillers scream blue murder when I give it to them. Maybe you're used to pain ... " her eyes widen. "Is everything alright at home? Do you get hurt or fall down often?" Of course, I'm supposed to fight villains and the like for Ninjago City, in that realm, you can't expect them not to fight back. I look back at the lady. She looks like I just told her that I'm hurt some more. I am, all over my body, but let's not worry her too much, shall we?

"Not at home..." I rasp.

"Then where?"

"Just in the streets.."

"Is that what happened this time? Did someone hurt you while playing outside?"

Wow, talk about being nosy. I don't see anything wrong with talking and telling strangers about yourself, I just wanna do what Wu-Sensei tells me, for Morro-Sensei, but Wu was right that the more you tell them, the more they will want to know about stuff even off-topic.

"No...I-I don't remember." I don't remember being in any streets or town before I woke up here, all I saw were some trees, a pink hedgehog-thingy called Amy, some blue and red stuff that flashed in front of my face, and a yellow helicopter. The rest is just a blur. Haha, Blue Blur. Like as in Sonic...

Sonic... that could hav-- no, I saw him rush over, and he didn't know what was going on, I could see that very clearly. His expression wasn't fake. So then... No, no, that's ridiculous, that was just a story I read on the inter web fish netting thing and then told my new friends on the island in the campfire. That can't be true, can it?

"Do you remember? I see a sense of realisation on your face there." gah, she interrupted my thoughts.

I shake my head, annoyed that I almost had it.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes! I don't remember!" Phew, my voice sounds better now. But my throat still hurts, like a rough sand is rubbing against the back of it or something. I was surprised at myself for almost losing my temper there.

"I'll take it from here." Another lady doctor comes in. She looks ... well ... stunning. She reminds me of maybe a mix of Amy or Rouge or something, but like a hyper-pretty grownup version of them.

"Oh--OK... you sure?" the 1st woman asks.

"Yes. Piss off. Shoo. I know how to deal with this. You don't. Now go." I'm shocked by her rudeness, but ... I also feel impressed by that. Saying that in front of me like that! And to that other person who was only trying to help!

"You aright?" the rebel doctor says. I nod.

"Anything hurt? Your throat perhaps?" I nod again.

"Don't worry about it, here eat this." She reaches inside her pocket and pulls out a flask with some weird torquoisey-blue floaty thing in it. It had some sort of almost body and a head and arms, and it looked like it wanted to get out. I look at it in wonder. She takes the thing out of the bottle and puts it in my mouth. "Chew. Swallow."

I don't want to eat something if it was a living being, but it looked so ... well ... tasty ... and I just couldn't resist. Mmmmmm. Heaven ... it was DELICOUS. When I'm done chewing, it slides down my throat in the most satisfying of ways. I feel-- how do I explain it?-- whole. My throat doesn't hurt as much anymore now. I close my eyes to savour the left-over taste in my mouth.

"Hm, thought so. An Eee Eks Eee, huh?" She suggests. I tip my head in confusion.

"What?" I mumbled.

"Dot E.X.E.." I still don't understand.

"Kid, this is the Digital Realm, I'd expect you to know about viruses. Who infected you?"

"I-I don't know..."

I finally regain my strength again and sit up, rubbing my eyepatch. Let's see if she lets me feel it.

"Ah bup - don't touch that." she swats my hand away. Wow, things are so different already. Before, I used to rub my eyes all the time whenever I felt like it, but now I'm not even allowed to put my hand near it.

"Why not? I just wanted to feel it."

"No matter whether you wanted to feel it or not, if your eyepatch gets knocked off then we're all in massive trouble."

"How come?"

"You'll get a sore throat again, but it'll hurt worse than ever to the point that you go crazy and end up killing us all. Literally."

"No I won't. I don't like killing."

"You'll still do it, without even knowing what you're doing. Now lay back down, you're not supposed to be out of bed."

I do as I'm told. "When will I get to go home?" I ask, as she tucks me under my blankets.

"Eeehhhh ... I'd say in a few weeks. Now shush and go to sleep, if you're not offended by that term."

"Why would I-"

"Nevermind."
