The stars were already speaking to me at noon.
I could see the moon becoming more vivid, and some stars begin to show. The whispers were very faint, but still there. Bruno and I ran around, helping with the decorations.
By the time the villagers started celebrating, the moon was tipping onto the sun. My hair came to life, already noticing the dimmer light. A solar eclipse. An annual occasion that was always so beautiful.
The Madrigal family were the only ones allowed inside the house. It was a time of celebration for us. We stood on the main level of the house, surrounded by our glowing doors. A table filled with food was put to the side.
"Everybody, a toast!" Senora Madrigal said as I saw the moon moving more and more. "La familia Madrigal!"
"La familia Madri-"
I gasped as my eyes glowed and the moon fully covered the sun.
It was complete darkness. The stars were more vivid than usual. And surrounding us, there were three figures. They were all gray, like a phantom. I could distinctly see two of them as they stood at each other's sides.
"Mom? Dad?"
They nodded. My eyes filled with tears. The Madrigal family looked at me in shock as Senor Madrigal stood next to Alma. He hugged Bruno first as I hugged my parents tightly.
"You're the reason we can see them, Tia," Mirabel realized.
Senora Madrigal hugged Mom. They were best friends in life, and even now, as both were in different worlds. Dad smiled at the way Bruno looked at me in awe. He walked up to Bruno and hugged him tightly.
"Take care of her," Dad said, his voice echoing between the worlds.
"Of course," Bruno breathed, noticing how happy I was.
"We'll always be here," Mom said. "And we can't wait to see them grow up."
"Thank you," Delores said, smiling.
Only four of them knew my mother before she died. She was the sweetest person in the world. She would help make arepas with Julieta. When times were rough, she would make Pepa happy. Only when she moved us was when she turned cold.
They didn't disappear until the moon was out of the way of the sun. Senora Madrigal hugged me warmly, surprising me. I was the one who brought the gift to that family. I was smiling even as I went to bed that night. I got to see my parents after all those years.
"That was amazing, mi vida," Bruno said as he walked into my room.
I thought about something Senora Madrigal told me. "Can you believe the casita is going to merge our rooms when we get married?"
"I can't wait," Bruno said, placing a soft kiss on my lips. "It's going to look very interesting."
"A lot of cool colors," I agreed.
Bruno chuckled. He hummed softly. "I can't wait to marry you. I've wanted this for a long time."
"Delores knew, huh?" I teased, remembering them sneaking into my room.
"Dang it! You heard that?" Bruno questioned. "I'm so sorry, amor. That's so embarrassing."
"That's cute," I corrected him, making him look at me. "You planned it before we even started dating. It might've been a little creepy then, but it's romantic now."
"I love you, carino," Bruno said, slipping off his ruana and walking over to my bed.
I smiled softly and walked over to the closet to change. "I love you too, mi amor."
