Billy lays on my bed as I brush my hair. "You think Sam and Heather will bless us with their presence this morning?" I shrug. "I told boss man not to count on them and just get two extra people today because I do not want a repeat of yesterday." I point at the shirt beside him and he throws it at me.
The door opens and my eyes widen. It can't be Sam can it? I really hate being at Billy's house but yesterday Sam wasn't there so I decided to stay over. Billy peeps his head through the door and then he sighs with relief. "Hey, kids." I peep my head and smile as I look at Eleven and Max. "What are you guys up to?"
They shrug. "Spying." I nod and shrug. "Have fun." Billy and I leave and I sing along to the radio while we drive to work. I can see him looking at me through the corner of his eye. We get to work and it's absolutely pouring. Billy and I are at the desk and I guess there was no need for the extra people cause no one is allowed to swim right now.
But that's ok cause my boss didn't listen to me so they weren't any extra people anyway. He doesn't like being given orders by girls let alone one younger than him and in high school. My trance is broken when I hear speaking. "Hey?" I don't even look up as Billy speaks without looking up either.
"No one in the water until 30 minutes after the last strike. And don't try and argue with me. You wanna get electrocuted, go climb a tree." "Billy, Jess, it's us." I look up and staring at us is Max and Eleven. "Oh hey guys what can we do for you?" "We found this and we wanted to know if it belonged to anyone who works here."
Eleven holds up a bag and I nod. "Yeah that's Heather's. Where did you find that?" Max looks at Eleven and they look like they don't want to tell us. "Forget I asked. Well give it to me and I can give it back to her." Eleven moves it out of my reach. "Or we could." I nod. "You could. But she's not here today. Both she and Sam ditched us today."
Both their eyes widen. "Girls what is happening?" They look at us. Suddenly our boss walks out with one of the lifeguards Sophie who is flirting with him. He looks at me and Billy. "You two can leave for the day. Sophie and I have got this. You deserve it as a thank you for yesterday. I know it was hard." He looks at Eleven and Max. "You girls ok?"
Billy nods. "That's my little sister and her friend. They just came to ask us something. Nothing for you to worry about. Thanks for the day off." We stand and we grab Eleven and Max taking them with us. " What's happening?" Something catches Max's attention. "Are those pictures on the wall?" Billy and I both nod. El and Max both walk up and stare at the photo of Heather.
They check behind them at Sophie and Levi (my boss) before ripping the photo of Heather off the wall and walking off. We whisper yell at them in panic and follow after them. What the hell is going on? Max starts switching on all the water and I immediately know what's happening. I've only ever seen this happen once.
When El was looking for my brother. Max looks at her. "What do you see?" "A door, a red door." Billy looks bloody confused and I just pat his hand. El rips off her goggles and I look at her concerned. I grab her shaking hand. "What happened, El?" She's breathing very heavily and I keep rubbing circles on her back.
She makes us leave and then tells us we're going to Heather's house. We decide to take Billy's car obviously. El tells us what she saw while we drive to Heather's house. Poor Billy is still trying to wrap his head around the fact that El has superpowers. We get to the house and we knock on the door.
No one answers so El opens the door herself. I try to stop El and Max as they walk right in. I sigh and walk in after them. I feel bad for dripping on these people's floor. We walk into the living room and sitting there comfortably is Sam himself with two other people. "Billy? Max?" The man sitting with him speaks up. "I'm sorry? Who are these people dripping on my living room floor?" Sam smiles.
"I'm sorry. Janet, Tom, these are my cousins Billy and Maxine. That is Billy's girlfriend Jessica. What on earth are you guys doing here?" Max speaks up. "We just wanted to make sure everything was ok." He looks at us surprised. "Everything is fine. Why wouldn't it be?" El glares at him. "Where is she?" I almost smack myself. Sam's smile drops. "Where is who?" Heather walks in talking about burning something and El and Max eyes widen.
Sam smiles. "Heather! You know Billy and Jessica and that's my other cousin Maxine." He looks at El. "And I'm sorry I did not quite catch your name?" She glares at him. "El." He nods. "El. Now what is it you were saying, El? You were looking for somebody?" She turns towards Heather. "I saw-" I interrupt. "They saw Levi today and he said you guys weren't at work. I was coming to check on Heather and they all tagged along."
He smiles. "Well Heather wasn't feeling too hot so we thought we'd take the day off to nurse her back to health. But you're feeling just fine, aren't you Heather?" Heather nods. "I'm feeling so much better. Do you guys want a cookie? They're fresh out of the oven." We shake our heads saying we have to leave. As soon as we get into the car, I look at El. "We've gotta teach you how to lie."
