It starts with just a flicker. A glimmer. And then it disappears.

For me, the glimmer was always there-but it always disappeared. This little sparkle was different from the ones I normally saw. The ones I learned not everyone could see.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Let me start from the beginning. Some people are born different, with different strengths and abilities. Some are strong, some are sensitive, some are smart, some are popular. I'm sure you've met at least one person like this. However, there is that indescribable difference that really matters. The very thing that never comes to mind is the first thing that makes you unique. That spark of life inside of you that no one can match.

Well, I can see that spark.

It took me a very long time to realize that no one else saw it. I thought it was natural to have the floating light hovering just to the side of your heart, in the center of your chest, its light gently throbbing. Perhaps it is. But no one saw it that way. So I was alone, me and my lights.

As time went by, I decided to name these lights. No longer just sparks, these were now souls. The life, the very essence of a person. The clockwork that made them click. Maybe that's why I was so interested in mechanics. I just had to know how things worked.

Early on, I was branded as the freak girl who saw things. How could I deny it, though? I had very few friends. And my brothers, who always ran off to escape my family's suffocating grip, were no help to me. It would be fair to say that I knew perfectly well how to be antisocial. Actually, that's how it all started.

But excuse me for being insensitive. I haven't even introduced myself yet.

Hi.

My name is Everly.

And this is my story.
