Sam's POV
I watched Everly walk away from me and head to her house. I hated the fact that she had to live there. You would think it was enough that she stayed at my house most nights, but if it were up to me I'd have her stay every night.
It continually frustrated me that I just watched as these things happened. Some friend I was. That's all I'd ever be too. Just Ev's friend. The past year I'd been trying to hide my growing feelings for her. I didn't know how she'd react. If she liked me back that would be incredible. But if she didn't....our whole relationship would be ruined. I hated that I was unable to do anything.
I made it home and walked through the door. I was headed for my room when Mom called out from the bathroom "Today's Everly's off day, right?"
You could say that, I thought. "Yeah, I sent her home."
"Did you walk her up to her front door?" Was Mom's immediate response.
I stopped. "No."
Mom came out of the bathroom. "I certainly didn't raise my son to treat a lady like that."
"Mom, she's just a friend...." I argued weakly. She raised an eyebrow. I knew she caught the little moments where I stared at Everly a fraction longer than someone who was 'just a friend'.
"I don't care. She's still a woman and you will treat her as such. Dinner's in an hour," she called back as she stepped into the kitchen.
I dropped my backpack in front of my door and entered my room. In the 24 hours since Everly had helped me with my room it was messy again. I sighed and sat heavily on my bed, placing my head in my hands. I thought back to how nervous Ev had been. I only knew this because she couldn't put down her little mechanism all day. And then the creepy feeling I had walking home....this all started with her seeing the guy with the white soul.
I took out my homework and worked on it until dinner was ready. We ate and I had just finished with the dishes when I heard a knock on the door.
"I'll get it," I announced. I threw down the rag I was holding and opened the door. In front of me stood the boy that had bothered Ev. I was getting a weird vibe off him, one that felt like what I picked up off of Everly, but distorted.
"Hi," he spoke, and held out his hand for me to shake. "I'm Connor."
Reluctantly I took his hand and shook it. "Sam."
He grinned and put his thumbs in his jean belt loops. "Can I come in? I need to ask you a few questions."
I stared at him, clenching my jaw. "Uh....yeah, sure. Want something to drink?" I offered, stepping back so he could come in.
Conner shook his head. "That's ok, I'm not really not that thirsty." He went inside and I showed him to the living room. He seemed like a decent guy, but I knew looks could be deceiving.
"What did you want to ask me?" I asked once we had both sat down.
"Well for starters, who was that girl you were with today in school?"
"Everly?" I said, surprised, before I was able to check myself. Shit, why are you telling this guy Ev's name? Why is this bothering me?
"Is she the girl with the funny little contraption?"
