I was skating by, earbuds in, the outside world a world away from my thoughts. An empty backpack hung from my shoulders. Gum snapped in my mouth as I blew a bubble. I hung to the right of the sidewalk as I passed a pedestrian. Wouldn't want to get into trouble. At least, not this early in the morning.
I got to the library just as the doors opened up, relinquishing its thousands of stories yet untold to me. I passed by a woman with a soft colored, light green soul. She smiled at me as I walked by her getting to the door. That was expected. To return the favor, I supported my skateboard with the crook of my left elbow as I held open the door with my right hand. The woman smiled a little broader, then entered. I followed.
The library used to be my escape when I was younger. Now it was my home. Pulling my iPod out of my jeans pocket, I switched the song to something more upbeat. I walked over to the young adult section. The only books worth reading, in my opinion, are located there. I ran my fingers along the spines of the books nearest to me, faintly smiling. A few titles caught my eye. I tugged them off the shelves and hugged them to my chest with one arm. The great thing about books was even though they held so much life, they contained none of the souls and amount of emotions that normally radiated off of people.
I was so intent in my searching that I didn't see him until it was too late.
"Oof! Hey, watch where you're walki-oh, sorry Everly. Didn't realize it was you." The boy got up off the ground and dusted himself off.
"God, Sam. You practically gave me a heart attack!"
His dark blue soul lightened slightly as he gave me a laugh. "You? What about me?!"
I rolled my eyes and playfully shoved him. "Help me with some of these."
Taking half of the books, he followed me to the library computer. "Are you looking for a specific book?"
"Yeah. Last time I checked there was one copy left." I entered in the title, and scrolled down. "Yes! It's still in." Leaving Sam alone with the books, I dashed over to the isle where the computer said the book was located. A tall, dark boy stood at the end, a book in his hands. I frantically searched for the book-nothing. The book was gone.
"Looking for this?"
I started at the voice, and turned around to see the tall boy now standing next to me, the book he had been reading now closed and outsretched towards me. I cautiously reached out a hand and took the book from him, as though he might bite me. His face stayed expressionless. It spooked me.
"Everly!" Sam's voice carried over to me as he rounded the corner of the bookshelf. "Don't go running off without me! Jeez!" He paused. "What's wrong?" he added, seeing the expression on my face.
I mentally shook myself. "Nothing." I turned around. The boy was gone. I faced Sam again. "Come on, we should get going."
His concerned expression began to fade as we headed through the checkout station. Still, however calm I may have appeared on the outside, inside, I was panicking. That boy had scared me in more ways than one but the biggest reason wasn't that he was dark, and knew what book I was looking for.
The reason was that his soul was white.
And no one has ever had a white soul before.
