"Sergio, what happened to Valentino out there?" I entered the room where he was being treated for his wounds.
"A pretentious thank god you're ok would've been nice." Sergio smiled at me.
"Of course, you know I'm happy that your fine Sergio but on the other hand Valentino isn't."
"Are you sure you'd like to know? I don't need for you to collapse and put the baby's life in any danger after I disclose to you what happened." He responded.
"I won't."
Sergio stared at me as if contemplating whether or not he should tell me.
"One of our men stepped on a concealed land mine on our way back and unfortunately Valentino had been standing not too far behind him when it exploded." Sergio explained.
I tried to seem a lot less affected than I actually was. I could just imagine Valentino in so much pain. What if his head had gotten blown off?
The father of my child with no head.
He had managed to use his own blood to save my life, stood up for me against another Mafia and his own family. Now here I was hopeless and could not do the same for him.
How could I have let this happen to him?
Sergio took my face in his wounded hands before saying to me that Valentino would be ok.
"Valentino is a strong man Lydia. Not like the usual average man. I'm sure you've felt that about him whenever you two got down and dirty." Sergio teased at a moment like this.
I guess he was just trying to lighten my mood.
"Where is he Sergio? I....I want to see him?"
"You know I can never grant you that wish without Valentino's permission Lydia."
"But he's my father."
"Even after everything that has happened Lydia, you still consider him your father?"
"No I don't but I want to see him."
"Just the way you wanted to see your stepsisters but almost killed them instead?"
"That was a mistake."
"Is it?"
"Sergio, please."
"And what do you intend to accomplish by seeing him?"
"Closure."
"You want closure from a madman Lydia? You might just be a lot more traumatized after hearing what he has to say to you so I'd advise you against it. I'm sure Valentino would've wanted the same thing." He dismissed.
"I had been tortured every single day by that man Sergio so I'm sure whatever he has to say to me can in no way traumatize me any further. Being tortured was traumatizing enough."
Without answering Sergio pulled out a picture from his jacket and handed it to me.
"Valentino had managed to take this from Romano before we captured him. I think he wanted you to have it." I looked at the picture to see a woman who looked just like I did.
"This is..."
"Yes."
On the picture showed a beautiful smiling woman. On the picture showed my mother that was happy before she died.
It was the first time I had ever seen her. All this time Romano had been torturing me but he had never once showed me a picture of my own mother.
Even before Valentino had gotten injured I was still on his mind. I tried holding back my tears seeing how much Valentino had managed to do for me.
