What time is it? Elijah asked.
Jasmine glanced at the diver's watch on her arm and in a poignant tone, It was eight past seven. You've done nothing but ask for time every five minutes!
You're so exaggerated, she said with a roll of her eyes. And what's wrong if I ask the time? Why are you complaining? She took a deep breath and looked at the woman again. I'm starving, aren't you?
Hungry but not starving. She turned her back on the girl and fixed her eyes on the dark sea with nothing to see but the tiny light coming from the port and a few lights from the ships in the far part of the ocean. And it's a good thing that the boat has an emergency lamp, otherwise, the stars and the moon might be their torch to each other.
Elijah huddled in the corner of the boat, hugging her legs. It was night, and it was getting colder. And the cold penetrates from the strong wind in her pedal pusher and a thin T-shirt.
She looked up at the woman again. Are you from here? I mean, in the city or the nearby island? She asked.
I'm not from here. My friend has a house in the city and I'm on vacation for a few days, Jasmine forcibly replied. Leah's family has a vacation home in the city. And from Malibu Bay, they sailed to the other island while celebrating the girl's birthday.
You're from LA, which part? Elijah continued to stir Jasmine's mind. What's your job in LA? Is that speedboat yours?
What are you, investigator? She snapped. She doesn't want to talk while thinking. She was starting to worry, it was night and they were still in the sea.
I'm just trying to make a conversation so we don't get bored. Elijah said calmly. Look at you, you've been frowning. You keep walking around as if you are waiting for a wife to give birth. The time will be even more boring than what you're doing. I'm a woman too, and I should be more worried than you because I am at sea with a stranger.
Why your calm really surprised me, she said drily. She didn't want to admit that she admired her calm.
If Leah was with her and they were out at sea and stranded, her model girlfriend - or ex-girlfriend - was already hysterical? She wasn't sure. What is certain is that she has no intention of going back with Leah. She's starting to suffocate in their relationship. And it's normal for you to worry because you said I was a stranger. She added.
Well... She glanced at the woman for a moment. She wrinkled her nose. You don't look like a killer or rapist... She stroked the head of Kiwi who was lying next to her as if to convey to the woman that Kiwi would not leave her in case she was planning something bad.
Jasmine wanted to laugh at what Elijah had said.
Looks can be very deceiving. She said. She didn't want to frighten her but she couldn't understand why the parents allowed this child - well, in a way, she just looked like a kid out of school - to sail alone. What if someone else was there with her?
Are you?
I am what?
A maniac? A psycho?
Shut up! She glared at her, both in irritation and amusement. In all her life not even a single woman or a man had thought that way about her.
If I am a maniac and a psycho I raped you many times even though we were in the sea. It would be to my advantage because then I would tie you with weight and just throw you into the sea and your dog can't do anything!
Well, I believe you, Elijah said in a casual tone.
What?!
That you're neither a maniac nor a psycho killer.
Jasmine sighed. Not knowing whether to be annoyed or laugh. But again the woman was right. If they don't talk the passage of time is more annoying. But then, that was the first time she had been with a woman, that they were alone for hours, that the distance from each other was ten ft.
You haven't answered me yet, is your speedboat yours?
What if it's mine?
You must be rich! She exclaimed mildly.
Jasmine raised her eyebrows. So?
She cocked her head and said guilelessly. Well, I like rich people.
Tell me something I don't know, she murmured drily, irritably.
And you don't like women who like rich people?
Jasmine looked at the girl angrily. I hate nosy women.
Elijah shrugged. Then there was a moment of silence. Jasmine, on the other hand, felt guilty. She thought she might be upset. She sighed and gazed at the sky. It was a clear night. The stars are scattered in the sky.
Elijah also looked up at the sky. Then her eyes suddenly widened.
There's a falling star! Elijah exclaimed who standing up and following the gaze that draw light in the sky falling and gradually disappearing.
Jasmine smiled without reaching her eyes and in a mocking tone, Why didn't you make a wish?
I should have but the star disappeared immediately. Also, I don't have any pockets. There was a slight slight regret in her voice.
Jasmine frowned. What is the connection of pocket to your wish?
She shrugged, pouted her lips, and said churlishly. I don't know either. But my mother taught me that my wish for a falling star will come true if I put my hands in my pocket.
If I hadn't quickly turned around and faced the sea, Elijah might have seen the smile on my lips. Jasmine couldn't believe she was having this kind of conversation with a woman. A young and pretty woman for that matter. They are like children.
There's another one! Elijah exclaimed again while looking up at the sky.
Instinctively, Jasmine turned and looked up as well.
The boat shook as Elijah quickly stood up and approached the woman. And from behind the stranger, Elijah entered without saying a word with both hands in the pocket of her sweatpants. Then she closed her eyes and uttered a wish.
