The stars dotted the sky, some burning brighter than others. The rain had been getting pretty bad as well, pitter-pattering on resident's roofs and windows.
Britain was still not back, which was pretty common, but America still worried. He closed the curtains, struggling a bit with his own, and threw the covers over him. He would usually stay up as late as he had to be until Britain came back, but tonight, he felt more worn out than usual.
He started to drift off to sleep until he heard a light thud on his bedroom door.
He drowsily turned around, put on his shades, and opened it. Rubbing his eyes, he caught Jackie out of the corner of his eye.
"Oh, um, hey, what's up," America adjusted his shades.
She awkwardly looked back at Britain's room, then looking back up to the American.
"Britain's not here," America stated the obvious.
She nodded at this, now nodding her head towards the American's room.
He cocked his head to the side. "My room?"
She nodded more vigorously this time.
"Do you want to... sleep here?" America asked slowly, afraid he might be wrong.
To his surprise, Jackie didn't nod or shake her head, but walked straight past him, jumping over onto his bed.
"Is it cold over there?" America gestured over to the Brit's room. To be honest, it was pretty chilly in the house. America thought he had fixed the heating. Apparently not.
Typically, Jackie slept by herself when Britain was not around, or didn't sleep at all. America closed his door again, not quite sure what to make of this.
Jackie waited until America reached his bed and threw the covers back over them before she laid down.
"Are you sure you don't want to sleep down there?" America asked, taking off his shades and placing them on the nightstand.
Jackie didn't respond, America took that as a yes.
He closed his eyes, turning away from her.
...
Jackie wasn't going to go to America's room, but she figured that she had to alteast show that she was more comfortable with America. It was the least she could do.
She turned to America, closing her eyes as well.
However, this was short lived.
She sensed the American mumbling under his breath. It wasn't loud, but she could definitely hear it. In the dead of the night, it was hard not to.
However, it wasn't coherent enough for her to make out words. Not like she wanted to know.
He seemed distressed though, wriggling around and gripping the covers over him tighter than before. Jackie didn't know whether to ignore this or shake him awake, but that was soon answered for her.
Without warning, he turned around, reached for her and pulled her in closely. She flinched at this sudden movement, but didn't move away. It was evident that America wanted something to hold onto, and she was just the closest he could get.
But no matter how much reasoning went into this, she couldn't help but feel this was oddly personal. She looked up at the American's face, noticing that he wasn't wearing his shades. This was the first time she'd seen him without them.
She wondered why he covered his eyes all the time. Maybe his eyes were light sensitive? Maybe he couldn't stand his face or eyes and decided to cover them up? Maybe he wanted to show off his sick sense of fashion? Maybe all of the above?
