Simon doesn't want to do it. I wouldn't either. But she's just standing there, and I'm getting cold. Just thinking of having to jump into the pool makes me shiver. Now I really feel bad for Simon.
"Here goes..." Simon says. He doesn't jump.
I can see Amari sneaking up on Simon in the corner of my eye, but my lagging reaction time doesn't let me stop them before she pushes Simon into the water.
"Wh—" Simon's surprised gasp is swallowed by the water. My eyes widen and I collapse to the edge of the pool.
"Simon-!" I turn to stare, thunderstruck, at Amari. "How could you?!"
Amari shrugs, shockingly unapologetic. "She wasn't going to jump."
"And?!" In the flurry of mangled surprise and shock, I don't notice that Simon hasn't resurfaced. In fact, it doesn't look like he's in the pool at all.
Carmen notices. "Uh, guys? Why's it taking her so long to come back up? It's not that deep..."
Lotus furrows his brow. "Where'd he go?"
"I'm sure it's just the shitty porch lamp," I try, but I don't even convince myself. I'm about to spin around and accuse Amari of... something, but I realize it doesn't really matter.
"Simon?" Amari's voice is high and scared. Before I, or anyone else, can stop them, Amari jumps in after Simon.
"No—!" Tyler is shocked. "Why? Why would you—?" He stares dumbfoundedly at the tiny waves rippling away from where Amari jumped in.
Neva begins to trail the pool's edge, shining her phone's flashlight into the watery depths. She reaches me after, knitting her eyebrows together. "They're gone? I have no idea what's going on, but this is one hell of a prank, 'cause it doesn't even look like they're in the water."
"That's weird." Tyler frowns.
Weird is an understatement.
Before anyone else does something rash, I want to do something right. "We should call the police or something."
