An Unexpected Package

It is finally the morning after a long night of heavy drinking. The room is filled with empty bottles of Budweiser and cans of Carlsberg, on the desk, on the bedside cabinets, even on the floor. Light is shut off from the room with a blind covering the window. In the bed, Evelyn is tangled up in her sheets, as she starts to open her eyes from her deep slumber. She drowsily rolls over, still tangled up, and looks at her alarm clock which had failed its job.
“11.00! Damn, I over slept…”
She climbs out of her bed and drags her feet one step at a time to the bathroom. The first thing she notices is the wreck that’s in the mirror. Her usual long, blonde, flowing hair has become tangled and knotted. Her normal shimmering eyes have turned dull, and bloodshot. She takes a brush to her mouth to brush her teeth. She has a quick shower which makes her feel a lot more refreshed and then redoes her make-up, which takes another ten minutes. She likes her hair to be straight, and she also has it covering one eye. She doesn’t wear too much make up, just lipstick and eye-liner. This is how she likes to present herself as a journalism student of the University of Gloucestershire.

When she was finally happy with her appearance, not that she cares what anyone else thinks, she walks out of her room and down the corridor. She sees a package on the table and quickly shouts in the dorm to see if anyone else is in. She doesn’t get a reply so she proceeds to read the label on the package.
“Evelyn Grey, Urgent,”
is all that was written. After seeing that it’s for her, she continues to open it and when she sees its contents, it makes her gasp, loudly. She lifts out a large gemstone about the size of an egg. It’s cyan in colour and literally shines with an array of different blues. When she checks the box again, she finds a letter that came with it.
‘Meet me tonight, outside the university, at 11.00pm. Come alone and bring the stone.’
For a while, Evelyn does nothing. She just sits in her seat and stares at the stone, bewildered.
“What the hell! Who is this guy and what does he want with me?” She almost yells.

Her strong will power finally kicks in and she decides not to worry about it, but she knows she is going to meet the person that sent her the letter. She keeps the stone in her bag and hopes no one notices it. She decides that she might as well go to the cafeteria before going to her class as she still has another half an hour.

When she finishes her breakfast, she makes her way to her class room.
“Great, another couple of hours of boring lecturing, can not wait!” She thought.

When her class was finished, which she thought it never would, she goes to the library for the rest of the afternoon, where she spends most of her time when she studies. She’s quite independent so she likes the library as there’s not exactly a lot of conversation there. She usually gets pretty carried away and loses track of time, and that’s exactly what happened this time as well. Before she even realises the time, it is 10.45. It is time for her to meet this mysterious person. She checks out the books she was reading and stores them neatly in her bag.

Evelyn stands outside the main entrance to the university, under the only street lamp that is provided. She checks her watch, 10.59. She notices that the city is not it’s usual busy self. It’s deathly quiet tonight, not even any cars. She hears the caw of a crow in the distance. She hates crows. As the time just tips over to 11.00pm, a huge gust of wind flushes past her, making her turn and cover her face. When she turns back to her original position a man is standing there that wasn’t originally, making her jump slightly. He wears long black robes, sleeves covering his hands, and the hood covering his face.
“Evelyn Grey… I would assume…” He asks her in a very slow voice and a low tone. It almost sounds like the voice of death itself.
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“Good. Did you bring the stone?” Evelyn reaches into her bag and finds the stone. She presents it to her in the palm of her hand.
“Good, now, grab my hand.” He extends his robes sleeve towards her and then she sees a skeletal hand come out of it. She almost screams!
“Y-your… hand, it’s... just bones!”
He chuckles.
“If this is enough to terrify you, I fear for what is to come…” Evelyn hesitantly forces her hand against his, and as she touches it, they both disappear and leave just a puff of black fog.
