As soon as Phil heard Daniel's stomach start to grumble, he jumped at the opportunity to drag him into his favorite restaurant. Daniel looked a bit confused at how quickly they were seated and served, but Phil had more important matters to attend to. He was absolutely starved.

Whilst flipping through the menu (unnecessarily, as he already knew what he would order), he began to chirp to Daniel about how much he loved this small place.

"This is my favorite place to eat, they're the only place that still has authen..." Phil paused. He couldn't just start telling a Nazi officer that this place served Jewish food, cooked by Jews. His palms started getting clammy. He couldn't let down his only Jewish friends left. If they got taken away, he'd be so lonely.

Dan interrupted his thoughts, motioning him to continue

"It doesn't matter." Phil mumbled. Daniel's mouth turned down in a frown.

"No, really. If it's important to you, it matters." Daniel said in a concerned tone.

Phil panicked, he needed to draw Daniel's attention away from the subject, so that he wouldn't accidentally blurt anything he wasn't supposed to. Luckily, he came up with an excuse quickly, laughing and feigning that he forgot what he had been saying.

Immediately, Daniel believed him and started giggling too. Phil was awed at Daniel's laugh. It was a really cute laugh, and he hadn't quite expected it. As they started to calm down, Phil found that he couldn't look away from the boy. He looked too innocent and young to be a Nazi officer, he was younger than Phil even. He should be in university, not chasing around Jews and obeying direct orders from Hitler. What had happened to Daniel that he was stuck in such a place of power so young?

Phil was shaken out of his thoughts when Elie, the waiter, placed a hand on his shoulder, smiling so hard that his eyes seemed almost impossible to see out of. Phil beamed back, shaking Elie's hand eagerly.

"Long time, no see!" Elie greeted.

Phil nodded, "I know! University has kept me so busy! I'll need to come back more often, I miss you guys."

Elie's face lit up. "How is university going? Everyone loves you? Your studies are going well?"

Phil chuckled. "Everything's going amazing, Elie. This morning was an exception, however."

Elie's eyes went straight to Daniel, and Phil knew he hadn't missed the uniform or swastika on his upper arm. Elie turned to Phil, and both could see the slight unease in each other's faces.

Phil spoke up. "Daniel actually saved me this morning," he murmured, glancing at said boy. But Daniel didn't seem to be listening, his eyes glazed over and set on Phil's face.

"Is that so?" Elie said, interest seeping through his question.

Phil nodded. "Very much so..." he trailed off, still watching Daniel.

Elie quickly got over his interest, and patted Phil's back. "Well, I'm glad you're okay. Now, the usual?"

"Yes, please. I've missed your cooking sooo much!" Phil enthused, and Elie laughed.

"And what will your companion be having?"

Both of them looked at Daniel, awaiting an answer, but he was still out of it. Phil leaned forward and swept his hand in front of Daniel's face. This got a response almost immediately, Daniel jumping back and looking up.

"Hmm?

Phil laughed. "What do you want to eat?"

Daniel looked down and seemed to choose the first thing on the menu. Elie smiled as he ordered, knowing it was Phil's favorite dish and walked away.

Dan was pretty surprised at how quickly their food came. Too quickly, he thought. He and Philip were having a lighthearted talk, and Dan was sure that things would get more serious after the food arrived. He didn't want them to. He wanted to stay in the casual mood.

And to his delight, it did. They argued about silly things, talked about music, and basically discovered that they had a lot in common. And Dan had been asked to call Philip 'Phil,' which led him to asking to be called 'Dan' rather than Daniel. Both agreed to the other's request with no hesitation, and Dan was feeling more than content. But there was something irking him about Phil's behavior.

Phil seemed to be getting more and more relaxed, which Dan was happy about. But there was something off. Phil kept trying to lead the conversation back to his job, and of course, Dan answered all his questions. But at some points it felt like he was being interrogated. It really bothered Dan. But he couldn't complain; after all, he'd been the one grilling Phil earlier. Plus, Phil just seemed like a curious person, so maybe all his questions were warranted. But Phil was very interested in what was happening with the Jews. He was trying to be subtle, but Dan caught on. He was just really confused as to why a guy like Phil would be so concerned about the Jews. He was pulled out of his thoughts by Phil's voice.

"You spaced out for awhile there, Dan."

"Right now?"

Phil nodded.

"It wasn't that long."

"Yeah, it was," Phil laughed, and Dan really loved his laugh. "You were out of it earlier too. You must have a lot of important thoughts on your mind."

Dan tried to stop himself but failed. The words were out of his mouth before he could do anything. "Mostly you."

Phil raised an eyebrow, and Dan rushed to defend himself.

"You're just a very interesting person, and you seem really curious about the Nazis and the Jews. It doesn't seem like a person like you would be so into the affairs of the Führer. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems out of character." Dan finished, leaning back in his seat.

Phil's smirk faltered, but was back on instantly.

"Maybe it's not the Nazis I'm interested in," Phil said in a suggestive tone. "Maybe it's you."

Dan's heart dropped along with his jaw.
