"Maybe it's you," Phil said in a sultry voice.

Dan was so shocked, he didn't notice Phil's eyes widen in surprise that he said that. Dan was just focused on trying to come up with a reply.

But he didn't have one. He just let his mouth open and close like a fish for a while. What context was that remark even in? Was Phil actually gay?

Before Dan could overthink it, Phil quickly, and very smoothly, said, "As friends, of course. You're very intriguing."

Dan wasn't going to lie, he was slightly disappointed. Of course Phil wasn't gay. But that didn't stop Dan from being a little bit hopeful.

《×》

The only thing going through Phil's head was a string of curse words after he accidentally flirted with Dan. Luckily, he somehow covered it up, and Dan was probably none the wiser.

《×》

Dan was more the wiser.

Ever since Phil had dropped that unexpected bomb in the middle of lunch, Dan had gone bright red. But he had also done a lot of thinking. Why would Phil get turned in for being homosexual if there wasn't any suspicions? His neighbors obviously suspected something. And Phil wasn't really helping his case out. Unless he was a naturally charming person, Phil had seemed really attracted to him. There was no other explanation. And no offense, but after the chair incident in Dan's office and the multiple scrapes that Phil had gotten himself into in the few hours they had known each other, Phil seemed too clumsy to be constantly smooth-talking people. He was just too clumsy.

Dan decided that Phil was definitely being a little bit flirty with him. No one takes a Nazi officer to their favorite restaurant for lunch unless they've got a thing for them, right?

But maybe Dan was just being really desperate.

《×》

Phil really needed to get out of this lunch thing. Dan was already starting to suspect that Phil was too interested in the Nazis for his own good, and odds are that Phil wasn't helping himself out by flirting with Dan. Hopefully Dan was actually as dense as he seemed in his office. That boy cannot take a hint, Phil clearly wanted to leave without him.

Unless, maybe he was totally okay with Phil being possibly homosexual, if you get the gist.

He didn't seem really bothered at all when Phil explained the situation to him after the Nazis beat the crap out of him. And he had seemed really flattered when Phil messed up and told him that he was interested in him. He had also seemed deflated after Phil rushed to correct himself. Maybe this young Nazi was hiding something too.

Regardless, Phil didn't want to get entangled in this mess, and decided to just leave before anything happened. He lied through his teeth about having a meeting with a study group and needing to leave, and unsurprisingly Dan offered again to walk him to the university. Phil panicked before deciding to just go with it. He might as well seem honest, and it wouldn't hurt to just visit the librarian.

But of course, this offer had Phil thinking even more about the possibility that Dan could be a secret homosexual Nazi agent. Or as Phil put it, a secret gay-gent.

《×》

Dan grew more and more infatuated with Phil over the course of the following days. He planned his schedule around Phil's, in hopes of getting a glimpse of him.

He would finish his work as quickly as possible, and then run to wait outside of the university. He had it worked out perfectly.

His morning would start off normally, sitting across from his father, eating breakfast and skimming through the paper. They would make small talk, and Dan would casually mention the lack of work in his office. His father would roll his eyes, and say the same thing every morning: "A Nazi is never idle. I have a few things you can do."

His list of jobs for Dan seemed endless, but Dan was undeterred. If this was what he had to do to see Phil, he would do it. He just needed to be out of the ghetto, and only his father's tasks would provide him the opportunity to be out in the town.

He would leave to start his jobs as soon as his father left at 9:00. He hurried to finish each job, not worried about any mistakes he made. No one would notice anyway. And at 15:00, he would run, run, run to catch Phil leaving his classes at 15:30.

Dan would arrive outside thr gate fifteen minutes before Phil was let out, giving him time to catch his breath and fix his fringe. He'd stand as straight as possible, and as confidently as he could to ensure that no civilian would dare bother him. His supply of harsh glares was limitless, and he'd stand with almost no distractions as he waited for the black-haired boy.

Upon seeing him, Dan would stride towards him quickly, making sure Phil couldn't dart away, and fall into step beside him. Their conversations would usually start when Phil would question if being escorted was really necessary. Dan would reply that it was definitely necessary, and he'd continue to do this until they could both be positive that Phil was no longer a target. Phil would sigh, but keep pace with Dan, and both boys pretended not to notice their hands brushing together the whole time they walked.

Dan liked this plan. It always ensured him time with Phil. And even though Phil slightly seemed as if he didn't always want Dan's company, Dan knew it was a lie. Phil was probably just a little bit scared that maybe Dan was investigating him. Or maybe he was scared that Dan would hurt him, or that someone would target him again. Whatever the matter, Dan didn't care. He liked Phil, and even though he didn't know if this was a good thing yet, he decided to just act on it while he had the chance.
