It's been ten years. Ten damn years. Antonio turned five only a few hours ago. And it is about that time for him to receive his gift. And the entire Encanto was waiting in anticipation. Everyone in the Madrigal Casita was scrambling to get ready. Including myself and my siblings.
Isabella, having grown very fond of me over the years, had become my dressmaker during social events. As she was creating a design in her head, large red roses appeared on my simple white dress. "It's beautiful. Red really is your color Reina." I smiled at her. "Thank you Isa."
"How's your sister been?" I had a feeling she would bring that up. "Mariana is doing very well." She's been singing at formal events and in the church and anytime she had the opportunity. Isabella always stayed close to her and adorned her with flowers. The Encanto thought she was being a very generous friend, but I knew there was something more. As always, Alejandro was right. Isabella had fallen in love with my younger sister. But the bittersweet thing was, she has already been engaged to a man named Mariano.
I felt so sorry for this young woman. Being forced into the "little miss perfect role" in the family. She would have been an amazing sister-in-law to Alejandro, Sara and I. And she would have been an amazing niece in law if I had married-No. I wasn't even going to complete that thought. As I was trying to pull myself together mentally, Isabella was brushing my hair and was about to undo the braid Bruno gave me all those years ago.
"No!" I yelled. That was the last part of I had of him. I couldn't let it be undone. Due to my little outburst, my fire had accidentally singed a part of my dress. "Reina! What did you do!?" I immediately started apologizing but Isabella was beyond mad. "I can't let you go out like this now! They'll think it was my fault for sending you off looking like this!" That made no sense. Why would the towns people blame her for something I did? "Excuse me?" I asked.
"I mean my image has to be perfect! The entire Encanto looks towards me and Abuela counts on me! From the day I received my gift, I had to work to help the Encanto and be the golden child. Someone everyone could be proud of. And, and Mirabel can get away with murder!" A large rose with even larger thorns appeared behind her. I had known all of this pressure would fall over her one day. I quickly embraced her shaking form and she held me tightly. "It's not fair Reina." She whispered to me. "I know" was the only thing I could say to her.
We then heard a sharp wind outside of the door. Isabella pushed me away and opened her door to see Peppa worrying as usual. "Tià Peppa is ruining the flowers. I'll be back to do your hair." She immediately regained her composure and put on her perfect smile before exiting. I couldn't let her take out the braid. That would break me even more. I left her room and went back to the sandy desert that was Bruno's room. These past years, I had practically moved into this room. Sometimes never leaving for days. But it was getting better. That's what I made myself believe anyway.
Little did I know, Dolores had heard everything. And the first time Alejandro confronted her with what he knew. "Dolores, you've heard him. He's in the walls. Isn't he? I can hear him and he is so stressed out. Every night he is sobbing over my sister. It's gotten to the point where I just listen and I started writing about it. If anyone read it, they would think it's the most tragic fantasy. But it's real you know it as well as I do!" Delores gave him a confused look"Alejandro, I don't know what you're talkin about." Alejandro slammed his hands on the table. "I've had it! I have had enough of this! You and I both know that Bruno isn't gone! He hasn't even left the Encanto! Reina's crying over basically nothing! She can't even leave his tower because if she does, there will be an argument and she will burn the whole Casita! I need to tell her that he is still here! They need to see each other again!" Before Alejandro walked off to find me, Dolores grabbed his arm.
"No. You can't Alejandro. He misses her just as much as she misses him. He's still afraid to love again. You know that Abuela disapproves of their relationship and you know she would say something and the wedding incident will happen all over again." Alejandro gave her a defeated look. "It's just-they're so broken." She sighed. "Sometimes you need to be broken to be built stronger. I don't know when that will be. It's not our choice. It's their choice to make." Alejandro stared at the ground. "It's like I know Isabella loves my sister but she's betrothed to the one you love."
"Something like that." She whispered. But there was no time to discuss anything else. For Antonio's ceremony had already begun. And it went off without a hit. He received the gift to speak to animals. And his room was a beautiful jungle. Everyone was so happy and so relieved that the magic was still strong. But that was all an illusion.
Soon there were cracks all around the walls. Large cracks everywhere. The candle was flickering. The magic it seemed was getting weaker. And the only one to see this horrifying event was Mirabel. No one believed her of course. Who would believe the girl that had received no gift? The party continued as usual. I couldn't bother to attend. I didn't want to think back on those painful memories that I knew would come up in my head.
The next day, Mirabel wanted answers. No one in the family was going to give her those answers. But she knew someone who could. Someone who knew her tió better then anyone in the family. Someone who loved her tió more than anyone in the Encanto. Me.
