Prompt: Jealous Regina.
Set in the missing year.
(It turned out longer than I anticipated)
Enjoy..."If you're going to cross the barriers then I'm coming with you." Robin grabbed the rest of his arrows and shoved them into the holder slung across his back. The light wood of his bow matched the colour of his hair and reflected the morning sun.
"I don't need a minder." Her sharp tongue pierced him but he seemed to revel in the pain, his blue eyes blazing with amusement.
"Regina, I think you should take him with you." The look of genuine concern in Snow's eyes was enough to convince her.
"Fine," she gave in and shot robin a glare over her shoulder as she stormed out. "But he better not slow me down."
Robin jogged a few steps to catch up to her once they were outside of the main hall. She was wearing her riding gear: black fitted trousers which clung to her curves deliciously and a brown leather jacket over a white shirt which came in at her waist. He inclined his gaze and saw that her hair wasn't in one of her usual haughty styles, instead it hung down past her shoulders, partially tied into a simple braid.
"If you stare any harder I'll have a hole in my head."
"Apologies, milady," he looked away but just caught the shadow of a smirk toying on the corners of her mouth. "I was admiring your hair. It looks different today."
She turned to face him and he looked across at her. She only wore a faint trace of make up which made her look younger, more at ease. Robin smiled at the thought, a dimple just forming on his cheek. His words threw her off guard and she hesitated before replying.
"Thank you," she returned his smile with a small one of her own, instinctively raising a hand and running it over her braid before focussing her attention back on the path. "Sometimes it's just easier..." Her words faded off and Robin knew she wasn't just talking about her hair.
They carried on in silence, the only sounds provided from the surrounding nature. Leaves crunched under foot as they travelled deeper into the forest and Robin halted suddenly, holding his arm out in front of Regina. She walked into him, cursing as her brows knitted together.
"What the hell--"
"Shhh!" He pressed his index finger to his lips and then pointed to the trees above them. Regina glared at him incredulously and rolled her eyes before following the line of his finger to look up. When she saw it she sighed and held her palm out, igniting a flame from thin air. She looked back at him and he nodded, pulling an arrow from behind his head and drawing his bow.
He fired his arrow at just the right moment to light the tip on her fireball as it sailed through the air and hit its target, knocking down the flying monkey from its perch with a thud. Regina walked over to it and toed its shoulder with her boot. When it didn't move she sauntered away back to where Robin stood.
"It would seem we make quite the team, milady." His eyes found hers but she averted her gaze. The last thing she needed was to care about someone. Everyone she'd ever cared about ended up hurt, or worse. She couldn't bare if anything happened to the thief as much as she pretended not to notice him.
"We need to keep moving." Her response was blunt and tugged the smile from his face. He pulled his bottom lip in between his teeth and nodded, striding past her without another word.
They reached the market town and much to both of their surprise, many people were bustling about their lives, completely unaware of the green witch that threatened their very existence. Regina thought of how simple it must be for them but pitied them. Living with no purpose is a burden she'd never wish to bare.
"What do you need from this place?" He asked, his eyes gently hovering over her skin.
"Just some things for a potion," she couldn't tell him what the potion was, she knew he'd try to stop her. "Oh look, there's a tavern, go make yourself at home." She pointed at the building and turned on her heel in the direction of the herbal shop.
Robin sighed and gazed after her as she walked away. The hold she had over him grew with each passing hour; he couldn't stand to be away from her, even if all she does is insult him.
He pushed open the door to the tavern and slumped into a bar stool, resting his cheek on his palm. "Scotch, if you will."
"Sure thing, sweet cheeks." Robin looked up and saw the bar maid leaning across the counter. The plunging neckline of her dress may have once kept him here all night, but his heart now lay with another. He allowed her a small smile before looking down and wringing his hands together. She placed his drink in front of him and he downed it in one, the auburn liquid giving him a satisfying burn as it passed over his throat.
"Another?" She was smiling widely at him. He was just about to decline when he felt her presence, her eyes raking him up and down. The Queen. He turned sideways and she offered him her steely eyes.
"Sorry to interrupt." Her tone was sharp like a knife. "But I have what I need."
Robin hopped down from the bar stool and walked towards her hesitantly. He'd obviously done something she didn't like. "Milady,"
"Would you please stop calling me that." She snapped at him and he recoiled, lowering his outstretched arm back to his side.
"Fine. Regina, then." He met her glare head on and arched a brow, contemplating whether that was brave or stupid.
"It's your majesty or nothing, thief." Her voice was low, an unknown anger seething out from her pores. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Sorry, have I done something?"
"No, I just didn't bring you here to make friends." She inclined her head back towards the tavern, her cheeks slightly reddening. The corners of Robin's mouth turned up into a smirk. "What?" Regina stared at him unfalteringly, despite the heat spreading across her neck.
"Jealousy doesn't suit you, milady."
Regina scoffed. "A queen does not get jealous," her words were slow and calm, contradicting the frantic look in her eyes. "Especially not of a common bar maid." She held her head high, showing off the sharp lines of her jaw.
"If you say so." He was still grinning, the dimples of his cheeks indenting further than she'd ever seen.
"Listen, outlaw, I don't know who you think you are--" Robin stepped forwards and pulled Regina by her hip to him, crashing his lips over hers and drowning out the rest of her sentence. At first she resisted, but then fell into his arms, a moan escaping her throat.
He broke away, still holding her close, and touched his forehead to hers. "I'm yours," he whispered to her, his breath hot against her lips. "If you want me, that is."
She lifted her eyes and they shone against the dwindling sun. She became aware of how close they were and realised that she didn't mind, even liked the feeling of having someone pressed up against her.
"You got yourself a deal, Robin Hood." It was the first time she'd actually spoken his name, not a trace of malice was laced in the words and she licked her bottom lip. She pulled him to her again, opening her mouth to him and gliding her tongue along side his.
He chuckled, smoothing a piece of her hair behind her ear. "Thank God, we wouldn't want both sisters to be green now would we?" She swatted his arm but smiled, unable to keep the floating feeling from lifting her up. "We should get back so you can make your potion."
"I might not be needing it anymore," Regina thought about the sleeping curse she planned to use on herself and dismissed the idea. "I think I just found a way around it."
