Robin's taking Regina on a road trip and despite what he says, he did get them lost.
Set sometime in the future when people can leave and enter Storybrooke as they please, and for once there's no threat to their existence.David had taught him to drive. Because whilst he loved Regina - her fiery personality is what originally drew him to her - she wasn't the most patient of people. He was trying, he really was, but each lesson would end in one of them swearing and slamming the car door. But that was years ago now. After the first few months behind the wheel, Robin found he rather liked to drive and spent many evenings planning road trip after road trip for their little family.
This time though, it was just him and Regina, driving past the pine trees which lined the edge of the road, their hands linked across the centre console. After all this time, they still had this indescribable pull towards each other. Finger tips coasting over cheeks, elbows brushing, shins bumping under sheets. It was as if they had a subconscious fear of being ripped out of each others arms, even though they both knew nothing could get between them now. Sometimes she'd just stare at him from the kitchen, lips curving into a smile, as he sat on their sofa, Roland curled up next to him and Henry leaning back against Robin's shoulder with his feet stretched out. Her little family. Robin caught her looking once and he smiled too, looked at their boys and back to her, his eyes telling her we made it. And they had.
"Do I get to know where we're going yet?" Regina didn't want to ruin the surprise but she also hated being left in the dark, so therefore the surprise became collateral damage.
"Patience, my love," He smirked across at her, knowing full well she wouldn't be happy with this answer. "You'll know when we get there." She huffed and turned to look out of the window so he squeezed her fingers, adding "Do you really think I'd take you somewhere awful?"
"No," she looked back to him. "I just like to know." She told herself to let loose for once and smiled, giving his fingers a squeeze back. "I won't ask again. I guess surprises are good once in a while." He laughed at that, nodding his agreement.
Three hours had gone by since then and it hadn't escaped Regina's notice that Robin's glances at the map became more frequent, or the fact that his smiles were significantly more tight lipped.
"We're lost." She called him out, crossing her arms over her chest and turning to face him as fully as she could with the restriction of her seat belt. Her brow was quirked up in that almost-amused way that was oh so Regina, the shadow of a smirk playing on her lips.
"No," Robin scoffed, and damn her
ability to read him like an open book. Was he really that obvious? "I know exactly where we are." But he wasn't about to let her know she was right."Where, exactly, are we, Robin?"
"That would be spoiling the surprise." Now it was Regina's turn to scoff as she shook her head, falling back against the seat to face forwards. A few moments passed in silence, minus the song playing on the radio.
"I'm hungry."
"We can stop for lunch at the next place we see." He told her and she nodded, rejoining their hands. A diner was coming up on their left, relatively decent looking considering they were at least fifty miles from the nearest town. Robin parked the car and they stepped out, Regina sliding her arm through his as they walked to the door.
The place was deserted. Not even a member of staff was in sight when they first entered, just a jukebox and about half a dozen empty booths lining the far wall. Regina looked across at Robin who wore the same expression of weariness that she did. They nearly walked straight back out the door, but an elderly waitress sat them down and took their order before they'd turned their backs. She seemed pleased that people were actually here so Regina couldn't bring herself to leave.
They waited for their food, neither of them bringing up the fact they were lost in the middle of nowhere with next to no phone reception. Instead, Robin stood up and walked over to the jukebox and chose a song or two. The first one played without Regina taking much notice of it, it's only purpose being background noise for their conversation.
Then the second song began to play.
Strange and beautiful
Are the stars tonight...Regina squinted skeptically a him. Was this the song she thought it was? He was grinning sheepishly like an idiot at her from across the booth so she assumed it was, her lips turning up ever so slightly at the corners.
And I want all the world to know
That your love's all I need...The guitars strummed in the background and Regina knew. She knew all along and he refused to tell her. But if this is how he was going to then she'd accept it, laugh at him and tell him she told him so.
And if we're lost
Then we are lost together...Authors note:
