"You." It wasn't a question, but a statement that escaped Robin's lips. He stood firm next to Regina, leaning closer to her slightly so their shoulders brushed.
"Zelena. I should have known." Regina kept her eyes locked on her sister who was descending from the beams on her broomstick.
"You should have." Zelena stood from her broom and strutted over, a smirk on her lips and a dark glint in her eyes. "I'm offended that you thought a common thief could do what I'm capable of, Regina." She turned then, lifting a hand to run along Robin's jaw. "Or maybe you just couldn't see past his pretty face."
Robin pushed her arm away, never taking his eyes off hers, a scowl dulling his usually bright features.
"I think it's because this is a new low even for you." Regina sneered and haughtily lifted her chin, her dark locks falling over her shoulder. "Stealing my jewellery? What do you gain from that, except maybe better taste?"
"Oh, Regina, don't you see by now? It's not the jewellery," Zelena had stepped closer, her eyes flicking between her sisters, wide and frantic, "it's what the jewels represent. I will take everything you ever had." Her last sentence was just above a whisper, jealousy and desperation oozing out of her like thick sludge, slowly drowning them both.
Regina scoffed and Robin pulled his bow free, pointed it at the witch. Zelena laughed, a high pitched noise which bounced off the walls, and flung him to the side without a single touch. His body collided with the stone wall, leaving him in a crumpled pile of tangled limbs on the floor.
Regina watched in horror before turning to face her sister, fireball in hand, her brow furrowed in anger. "It's not my fault our mother abandoned you!" She flung her arm forward and released the fire. Zelena dodged it, cackling once more as the flames burned themselves out. Regina stole a glance to where Robin lay; he hadn't moved.
"Why don't we just end this now?" Regina moved towards her sister, her gaze alert for any sudden movements.
"What? Without an audience?" Zelena's smile was spreading across her face. "There's no fun in that, sis. I'll be back, just you wait." She spun on her heel and jumped on her broomstick, shouting a goodbye as she flew out of the balcony window.
Regina turned and ran to where Robin lay motionless, dropping to her knees in front of him and lightly shaking his shoulder.
"Robin?" Nothing. "Robin, don't do this!" Her breath hitched, a lump lodging itself firmly in her throat as she tried to wake him. The left side of his face was covered in blood, dark red and thick as it slowly ran down to his jaw. She raised her hand, healing the wound with her magic and then wiping the blood away with her sleeve. He still didn't stir. "Please, Robin." She bent down and rested her head on his chest, grasping at his blood-soaked cotton shirt, breaths hiccoughing out of her in shallow sobs.
--
A cold wind blew through the palace, carrying the last dregs of winter on it's back as it weaved in and out of the pillars. Regina had hardly spoken for days, just moved back and forth from her room where the thief lay, still not woken by her efforts to reconnect him with the living. But he wasn't dead, she felt it. Knew somehow that this was temporary and she would fix it. Everyone else might have given up on him but she wouldn't. She thought of Roland growing up without his father and of the merry men without their leader. She thought selfishly of her own life, how his absence would be the final nail in the coffin for her believing her happiness was possible.
"Your Majesty, there's nothing we can do," Doc spoke softly to break the news. She may not admit it, but everyone saw the soft spot she held for Robin. "Maybe--"
"No! I will find a way," her eyes were red rimmed from the constant tears she shed when she thought no one was looking. "I have to find a way."
Snow placed a hand on her shoulder and offered a sad smile, telling her she'd do anything she could before ushering the dwarves away and leaving them in silence.
Regina grabbed Robin's hand and held it in her own, the limp weight of it causing her a surge of nausea she tried to push down. The tears flowed more freely now, two never ending rivers gliding down her cheeks. She wondered why she felt this way towards someone she hardly knew - told him as much despite him probably not being able to hear her - idly turning his palm over in her hands. Then she saw it. The lion tattoo.
She gasped, let his hand slip from her grasp. Could it...no. That was the type of thinking that would just end up with her hurt again. But what if it worked?
True Love's Kiss.
Who was she kidding, they'd only decided they liked each other less than an hour before Zelena... She didn't love him. Did she? And he couldn't love her. No one could.
And yet she couldn't stop herself, couldn't bring herself to pull back as she leant in, capturing his lips in a lingering kiss. A flash of light burst out from where their lips touched and Regina sat up, blinking back the tears forming in her eyes.
Robin sucked in a breath, his eyes snapping open and locking on the woman sitting before him. He sat up, sliding his fingers into her hair, pulling her closer to return his mouth to hers. She chucked slightly, the sound muffled by Robin's mouth but he pulled back and smiled at her, tugging his bottom lip between his teeth.
"That was a long shot." She admitted, holding the material of his shirt in her fingers.
"Well I'm glad you took it." He said, wrapping his arms around her and bringing her into a tight hug, sighing heavily next to her ear. His breath was warm against her skin and sent a shiver running through her. "Who'd have thought, the Evil Queen and the Thief."
"Not me." Regina smirked, lifting her hand and resting it on his cheek. "But since that's how it turned out..." She seized his lips into another kiss, swiping her tongue along his bottom lip and twisting her fingers into the hair at the nape of his neck. They should probably talk about what this meant for them, but for now Regina wanted to stay wrapped up in Robin and forget about the world around them. For now she was home.
Authors note:
I hope you liked it!
Anyway, remember when I was talking about an AU story the other week? Well I've nearly written the first chapter of it and I'm going to post it in the next couple of days. The story's called 'Twenty Three Pages' and I have the plot pretty much worked out. Since I've finished school for the summer I'll be updating it hopefully weekly as well.
Thanks for sticking with me! :)
