DEE'S SPA,
MAITAMA, ABUJA
FEBRUARY, 2022."Hey, Chidinma", A long-legged, light-skinned girl called as she walked into the lounge.
The girl who'd been called, Chidinma scowled internally, but plastered a smile on her face as she responded, "Kiki, how're you doing?".
There were a few other women in the extra-private lounge of Dee's salon; a ridiculously furnished place where the socialites of the capital gathered.
Left to each individual, they'd rather there was a private room for only themselves. But alas, Dee's was the best salon around, had the most premium gossip and most importantly, was the most expensive.
Kiki settled on the chair next to Chidinma, waving at the other women present.
Chidinma rolled her eyes internally again, irritated.
She'd once been best friends with Kiki, back when her father was showing promise of becoming the next president.
They hung out, and she was always one of those girls that flocked around the girl, hyping her up and making sure she got her on her Instagram story.
But the elections had gone awry, and with it, Kiki's privilege.
Her dad had lost a lot of money after the campaigns, and word on the street was that they were thinking of moving to a less expensive place to save costs.
Naturally, Chidinma had started avoiding Kiki...... For what it was worth though, she lasted a lot longer than their other 'friends' did.
After a while, she couldn't help feeling like her image was getting tainted by being with the girl.
Whether Kiki had noticed her sudden absence, or that of their other friends, Chidinma didn't stick around to find out.
But when they met outside, the girl still greeted her with a smile and a wave.
"Hey", Kiki greeted yet again as she kept her bag on the table.
Chidinma's eye caught the bag, her eyes widening in surprise when she recognised it.
Her words came tumbling out before she could stop it, "Isn't this from the Chanel's latest fashion show? The one carried by Nora Skies?".
Kiki feigned apathy, "Oh this? My boyfriend got it for me, I didn't notice".
Of course, her words were no more true than her having a boyfriend.
She'd gotten the bag by selling half of the other bags she had, but she couldn't as well tell anyone.
Not especially the ones who'd left her the moment she didn't have as much to offer.
Chidinma looked at the girl who was playing with her nails, and back to the bag.
"Nevermind, it might not be i---", her words were however cut short with a glare from Kiki.
"They are. They're the real deal", she defended fiercely.
Chidinma smiled mockingly, "I thought you didn't know about them?".
Kiki, seeming to realise her slip up calmed down, noticing that they'd drawn attention from the other women in the salon.
"Well....", She said, clearing her throat. "....I have a good eye for these things, you know?".
Chidinma said nothing, just smiled. But her silence didn't last long.
"Well, I got tickets to Governor Yahya's dinner party", she said, drawing out a card from her bag.
Kiki's jaw hit the floor, as did the other women in the room.
