Standing in the deserted dirt lot I look around to find absolutely no one. I used to love this place. Before High School me and my Dad would come here to watch my bother play. He's now graduated but we would come anyway and watch the new players. Now a senior I cheer at the games. The flash of passing headlights bring me out of my day dream. The light reminds me that I have no ride home. I usually would drive or call my dad but he passed away a few months ago. I have to call someone but it's 11 o'clock at night and all my friends are at the after-game party. Who do I know that's not there or sleeping by now?
Greyson Samuel. I haven't spoken to him since Freshman year. We used to be best friends, but stopped talking, I think we just grew apart. I'll smile at him when we pass in the halls sometimes but nothing more. I pull out my phone and scroll to find his contact, not knowing if he has the same number. I press "call" anyway.
It rings three times before I go to hang up. A drowsy voice comes through the speaker before I can.
"Hello?"
My heart pounds a little harder.
"Hello? You there?"
Tears start to form in my eyes.
"Lenny?"
"Yeah it's me." My voice wavers.
"Where are you? Are you okay?" I can hear him rustling around.
"I'm uh.. I'm standing here in the parking lot.." I'm still trying to explain when he cuts me off.
"You're still at the school? Seriously? Hold on." I can tell he set the phone down. I can hear a belt buckle, then a bang following is an "ouch".
"I'm coming to get you. I'll be there in 20."
"Okay thank you."
"Always Lenny, you know that." I end the call.
Sliding my phone back into my cheer bag I decide to change. There is a tiny bathroom building out here that never gets locked. I rummage through my bag to find my tall socks after putting my jeans and tee shirt back on. My cowboy boots were the last thing my dad got me. They're my favorite. Square toed and brown. I pull my hair out of my ponytail and ruffle out the hair tie dents. Messy blonde beach waves fall out.
I walk out of the building and sit down on a parking block. I start picking at a tiny hole forming on my thigh. Before I create a huge hole I pick up a strand of hair and twirl it. Soon I hear Grey's Chevy pull in the parking lot. Standing I let go of my hair and grab my bag, I smile when he pulls up next to me and grabs my bag from me. He throws it in the the bed of the truck.
"Hey." I say to him.
"Hey back." He looks tired, he played in the game tonight.
"Sorry for waking you." My eyes are a little dry.
"I wasn't sleeping I was uh- I was just uh- watching tv, ya know?"
I know for a fact he was sleeping, but that's just the kind of guy he is. He would never let me feel bad. Even if he changed and is now the "bad boy". God I hate stereotypes, they actually make me cringe.
"Oh okay." I smirk a little. He sees this and cracks a smile.
"Are you ready?" I look him in the eyes and say yes. He rounds the front of the truck and opens the passenger door for me.
"Thank you kind sir." I climb in.
"You're welcome m'lady." He bows at me, and chuckles.
He jogs over to his door and slides in, putting the truck in drive and pulling out of the lot. I turn the dial to the radio up, Alan Jackson coming through the speakers. "I love this song" he tells me. I smile and nod my head. After two songs he turns down the radio and asks me,
