Derek was done with love or so he told himself as the Hales settled into their new home near the preserve in Beacon Hills, California. All he had to do was get through his senior year which should be a piece of cake. He'd never had trouble making friends before, but he wasn't really looking for any relationships platonic or otherwise outside his family. He was closed off and though it worried Talia and Nathan they did not push their son to be more sociable. They were just grateful he was there, and he was ok even if ok was far from good.
Derek took a deep breath as he pulled into the school parking lot. He glanced around noticing a vast group of students scattered across the school grounds and he slouched in his seat a bit. He noticed a group of girls that were by all appearances the popular ones that wore short skirts and high ponytails. Derek realized that was perhaps a stereotype and rude of him to assume but it wasn't like he knew them or had any desire to change that. He turned his gaze away towards the other side where a group of jocks sat, a few of which were throwing around a football. Of course the jocks were playing catch which he supposed was better than showing off to the group of girls across the way. However it seemed strange to see a football because he didn't think Beacon Hills High School had a football team.
His attention however was then drawn towards two guys walking up to the school after getting out of a blue Jeep CJ5. Derek was impressed as it was in semi good shape for the year it seemed to be. That however wasn't what drew him in. No, what caught his attention was a jock hollering at the taller of the two guys before flinging a lacrosse ball at them. Derek tensed sure it would hit one of them in the face but as fast as he blinked the taller guy had his lacrosse stick out and had caught the ball.
"Wow Jacks darling. Didn't know you wanted to play with balls that badly," he teased making the jock go red in the face before he threw the ball back. "Save it for the field. Ok big guy?" he practically purred before winking at the jock which made the others start whooping.
"You wish, Stilinski. I'll see you on the field," the jock fired back but without malice.
"Uh huh. On or off the field I don't mind seeing you babe," he smirked before fist bumping his friend and heading inside.
Derek went slack jawed because alright sue him but open homosexuality wasn't something he'd seen where he grew up. He knew his parents loved him regardless but this was strange. He grabbed his bag knowing that if he didn't get out of his car right then that he wouldn't get out at all.
He checked in at the office and was given a class schedule before being directed towards his first classroom. He steeled himself to go inside when everything in him wanted to turn around and go home.
"Hey there," said someone to Derek's right.
Derek glanced towards the voice and his breath caught as he came face to face with the guy from earlier who had caught the lacrosse ball effortlessly. "H-Hi," he stuttered.
The guy tilted his head and took in the schedule in Derek's hand. "Oh I see. Newbie. Welcome to Beacon Hills," he exclaimed, offering his hand.
Derek shook it and nodded. "Thank you," he greeted quietly.
"So what year? No wait let me guess. Hmm. Well you're not in my year but I'm going to say a senior?" he guessed watching Derek closely.
"Yes," Derek confirmed with a nod. He watched as the other guy did a fist pump.
"Go me. Ten points to Gryffindor!" he crowed excitedly before noticing Derek's quizzical look. "Sorry. I'm a total nerd but I own it and so there's that. Also I'm technically a Ravenclaw but I mean I suppose I possess traits from all four houses. I even possess some traits for Slytherin second to Ravenclaw. I like to think that I'm unsortable because I don't conform. I'm Stiles by the way."
