“I assure you, sir, we are so excited to be working with Greggs.” Aziraphale Fell tells his client as he shakes his hand.
“And he’s not all talk, either.” Chamuel adds as he stands next to Aziraphale. “All it took was four days for him to earn a loyalty card.”
Aziraphale nods, “That’s not a lie. I love sweets, and I love Greggs sweets as well.”
“Oh, that always makes us so happy to hear.” the owner smiles.
“Great!” Chamuel replies. “We’ll be sure to send over the books so you can get them on your reading shelf as quickly as possible.”
The minute the clients walk away, the two of them do a cheer.
“I knew it!” “See, I told you they’d jump at the chance to have some classics in their reading area! And it’s one of the biggest bakery/cafe chains in the country!”
Chamuel admits, “Not bad for someone who initially told me to sod off at the very idea of moving books out of your shop.”
“The owner has as much of an appreciation for books as I do. I know they’ll be in good hands.” Aziraphale explains. “And the fact that they’re the less valuable ones doesn’t hurt either.”
“Oh wow. Aziraphale Fell just made a joke about giving away some of his precious books. I think I might faint.” Chamuel teases.
As they leave for the bookshop, Aziraphale tells him, “So I suppose I’ll put the books together myself before I head off.”
At that, Chamuel adopts a look of horror, “What? No! You have to be here!”
Aziraphale shakes his head, “I’m afraid not. I’ve held off as long as I can.”
CHamue argues, “I mean no disrespect to you, but you were friends with them a long time ago! It’s not like they’re in a hurry to have their affairs settled, are they?”
Aziraphale concedes, “You’re correct on that part. But it’s up to their lawyer, not them. They made me executor.”
Chamuel ponders, “And why exactly did they give you that particular job?”
Aziraphale continues, “I’m the closest thing they have to siblings. Their children wanted no part in it, and I assured them I’d do everything I could to respect their wishes.”
Chamuel isn’t even remotely swayed by this, so Aziraphale adds, “But I promise, everything will be fine. I’ll go, sign some important documents, and be back before you’ll know what hit you.”
Now Chamuel stops on the sidewalk to look at Aziraphale. “Where did you say they lived again?”
“Eden. You’ll be intrigued to know it’s the exotic plant capital of the United Kingdom. I did my research.”
Now Chamuel finally smiles, “Well rest assured. Soho and your little bookshop will be right here waiting for you upon your return.”, then offers a wave goodbye before leaving Aziraphale to head inside alone.
Aziraphale makes it a point to look out the window as his cab drives him through the town.
Right as he remembers he ate all his goodies on the car ride to help settle his nerves, so he asks,
“So sorry, but could you stop here? I just need to go in for a nibble.”
After the driver parks, Aziraphale makes it a point to give her a generous tip for waiting before getting out.
Aziraphale has to admit, he quite likes what he sees as he walks towards the bakery in front of him, and he’s so focused on that, he completely misses the man in front of him, and it’s all he can do to not fall back or scratch the other man with his golden ring as they bump into each other.
