Kim Dokja was twisted

Kim Dokja was twisted.

All thanks to his father's twisted 'love.'

He believed from childhood that love was like that. Love needed to be painful for it to be cherished more.

If it didn't hurt, then it wasn't love.

After all, all the attention he received from his loving father was full of wounds and screams. His mother who was receiving the same love told him that his father was only in a bad mood for always losing at his gambling hobby.

"Dokja-ya, it's okay. It's temporary. Your father loves you, he loves us. He loved--"

It was like a mantra, a hypnosis which she always recited, as if brainwashing herself and her boy while she carefully bandaged the fresh wounds on the little boy's thin limbs, even ignoring her own. Her hands were shaking and a rueful smile kept on masking her pale, thin face.

If love was supposed to be painful, shouldn't he love him back? Maybe a few cuts, a few scratches, would that be enough?

And since he was receiving a proper 'love', it was appropriate to reciprocate in kind.

'Father loves me. Father loves us. I should love him back...'

He recited the mantra that his mother arduously taught him, while picking up the kitchen knife that was dropped.

Even when his father was gone, people still kept on 'loving' him. During his high school years, there were these people who also took an interest in him, bothering him every day, even asking him what novel he was reading all the time.

'They should love me, right? If not, then why are they interested in me and in what I read? Why do they keep on calling my attention?'

Kim Dokja had a twisted definition of love.

Until one day, he learned from his newly found friends from university that his crush and dorm roommate, Yoo Joonghyuk, obviously loved him back, so he bravely confessed. The man grunted in annoyance, but he unexpectedly agreed to date.

'He is like my favorite protagonist. He suffers every time in the novel, but I love him a lot since he never gives up.'

He loved reading about him. Loved how the protagonist desperately struggled for the sake of his goals. Even if he died thousands of times, even if he despaired and was betrayed countless times, the protagonist kept on moving forward.
