THIS ONE ISNT FUNNY I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY REALLY GOOD-ISH. I MIGHT MAKE A FULL LENGTH STORY OF IT :D

You stretch your arms out as you stand from the couch, you yawn as you make your way through the house to your bedroom. It takes a little effort to open the door, it creeks as it moves and you make a mental note to call the landlord tomorrow to have it either repaired or replaced. After all, having a door that sticks has to be some sort of fire code violation, right?

You pull back the duvet and climb into your bed, stack both of your pillows then lay down on your back. You pull the covers up over and shift a little until you feel somewhat comfortable. You yawn once again and close your eyes, ready to fall asleep. Everything is as it should be and you’re looking forward to a good nights rest, you have no work in the morning so you plan on sleeping in, you’ve told everyone not to bother you until at least 10. Starting work at 5am for the past two weeks has been hellish on your sleeping pattern so you plan on making the most of your so rarely taken time off.

You lay there for a little while, your eyes closed and breathing relaxed but you can’t fall asleep. Your eyes feel heavy and your bones feel like lead but still you can’t fall asleep. You huff slightly and shift a little; the mattress squeaks a bit beneath your weight, the noise sounds abnormally loud in the silence that surrounds you.

Silence. That’s it. It’s too quiet. You normally go to bed around 11pm; usually you can hear the sound of traffic buzzing outside your apartment or the muffled sound of your neighbours TV through the thin wall that separates your bedrooms. Now though, there’s nothing. But the repetitive sound of your own breathing. It’s that sort of silence that lets you hear the sound of your own heart beat when you press your ear against your pillow, the sort of silence that’s… too quiet.

Your eyes are open now, did it get darker? You’re facing your window but there’s no lights from the street lamps peaking in through the curtains. There’s not even a hint of moonlight. You pull your hand out from beneath the covers and hold it just a few inches away from your face, you can barely see it. You wiggle your fingers a little but still you struggle to make out the shape in the dark.

You glance back to the window and furrow your brow, was that a cold breeze you felt against your arm? It couldn’t have been… your windows closed; it’s broken and won’t open so you know that it couldn’t have been the wind. Maybe there are some cracks near the window? That’s got to be it. These apartments are old, there’s bound to be some little cracks here and there. You’ll check in the morning and let the landlord know when you call about the door.

You reach out to the nightstand next to your bed and blindly feel around for the cell phone that you left charging there a few hours ago. When you find it you unplug it from the cable and bring it over to the bed. You shift again and tug the covers up a little higher, has your room gotten colder? You really will need to check for those cracks in the morning, what’s the point in having your heating on if you’re just going to freeze anyway?

You swipe your finger over the touch screen of the device and find yourself squinting at the brightness of the screen. The time on it reads 12.32am. You’ve been laying here for half an hour already and haven’t fallen asleep. It doesn’t usually take this long. Sighing you slide your phone under your pillow and turn. Your back is now to the window and you’re facing the wall.

Did something move? No, of course not. Your mind is playing tricks on you. That’s what you get for reading those scary stories before bed. There’s nothing there… Just go to sleep.

You lay there for a while with nothing but the sound of your own breathing and the rhythmic beat of your heart in your ear.

It’s the silence, that’s why you can’t sleep. It’s just too quiet.
Maybe you’ll listen to some music?
You can’t, you don’t have any on your phone.
Maybe you’ll fall asleep with the TV on? No, the couch is incredibly uncomfortable to sleep on. You can’t bring the TV into your room because the only place you could set it down is the nightstand and that’s too thin to hold up a 40 inch TV. Sure there’s a dresser in your closet but pulling all that out would take forever, you’re too tired to do that.
