1.
Hastú woke up but couldn't see in front clearly due to a pounding headache.
'How long have I slept...'
He tried to recover his consciousness but could not come up with any memories to explain the situation, it just felt like he was trapped in an infinite space where not a single sound exists. After quite some time passed finally his blurry vision began to return little by little. Hastú slowly got up putting his head in hands, and realized that he was in the middle of a forest where he had never seen before. Everything around was wet as if it rained a lot last night.
•
Around Hastú, his friends were also waking up one by one. Feeling dizzy and bewildered, everyone seemed to be having a hard time understanding the current situation just like Hastú did. Hastú and his friends were only staring at each other. The silence in the strangely quiet forest weighed heavily on them. No word was exchanged, but everyone was thinking the same - no one knows where we are, how we got here, or what we were doing before we got here.
•
They were like players in the locker room of a losing team after an important match. No one knew what to say, no one wanted to speak first. Time was ticking away in such an awkward and forlorn atmosphere in this wet forest.
2.
"I feel hungry."
This short sentence of a friend, who was grabbing her hungry stomach, sparked other friends to open their mouths, speaking out what they were afraid of talking. The emotions such as fear, anxiety, and anger, created by the deleted memories, turned themselves into unrefined words and sentences. Questions not answered filled the air of the forest for hours.
•
No matter how hard they looked around they couldn't find anything to eat, resulting in the negative emotions getting worse. As they felt hungrier, this negative emotion gradually transferred to fear. The growth of fear, by return, pushed the questions, such as where we were, how we got here, and what we were doing before we got here, out of their attention. The important thing was to find something to eat that would quickly quench this hunger.
•
Then Hastú, who was gazing at something closely, muttered in a low voice.
"Can we eat this?"
Everyone looked at where Hastú's finger was pointing. A huge net of white threads that were intertwoven - looks like a foam cotton - was growing in the ground and near the roots of trees. Nobody could tell what exactly it was, but it must be something that had been exisiting there for a very long time.
3.
It had a texture similar to chewing meat, and the taste and aroma of mushrooms. Even some friends, who were reluctant to eat them when they were displeased with their appearance, put them in their mouths and chewed, saying
"Oh... this is quite okay!"
Moreover, the population was so huge that even though Hastú and his friends ate as much as they could, this white matter was constantly connecting and growing everywhere underground and around the tree roots.
•
"Let's call it mycelium."
suggested Hastú. It doesn't matter what the name is, the friends continued to eat mycelium just nodding to whatever Hastú said. As they were full, the fear that surrounded Hastú's friends gradually began to diminish. Now it doesn't seem important to them to discover where they are, how they got here, or what they were doing before they got here. They were just happy and relieved to forget their hunger and fear.
•
Hastú thought deeply.
'If we can't get our memories back anyway, we have to accept the situation and find a way to overcome it.'
Hastu's friends were already asleep, happy with their fullness, but Hastú couldn't take his eyes off the mycelium, which was constantly growing in the ground connecting the roots of trees. The thought that mycelium, with such a huge vitality, would protect their lives in a variety of ways other than eating ran through Hastú's head.
'I can save them. With this mycelium.'
Among his sleeping friends, hope was floating in Hastú's mind.
