The Bad Boy's Secret

Chapter 7

The next day the boys aren't at school. It's not unusual or anything for them to skip school, they do it so often that it's amazing they haven't been expelled yet.

The day was slow and uneventful, Tami and I mostly just talked about our confusion as to why the boys have taken an annoying interest in us. She knew something was up but knew not to push it when I said I was fine.

When I got home I started to tidy the house. CPS inspections are really annoying, one usually board and annoyed person gets sent from the office to basically interrogate us then look around the house.

I go up to my room and begin reading City of Bones for the fifth time. I end up falling asleep with the book on my chest.

When I wake up I realise that I didn't set my alarm and I'm going to be late for school. Oh well, I'm already late, no need to rush.

Once I've showered, I throw on my Fall Out Boy t-shirt and my red jeans with my converse then throw my hair up in another messy ponytail. I stuff everything into my bag and run down the stairs deciding to skip breakfast.

I take my phone out as I'm walking to school to see two texts. One from Tami and one from... Dustin?

I open the one from Tami first.

From: Tami
Dude, WHERE ARE YOU!? You must have a good excuse, you haven't missed a day of school, ever. Are you okay?

I laughed and sent her a text back.

From: me
I just slept late, I'll be there in time for 2nd period.

I hit send then opened the text from Dustin.

From: Dustin
Hey, you aren't here, are you okay?

From: me
Yeah just slept late, I'll be there soon

I'm curious as to how he knows I wasn't there. Maybe he saw Tami alone? He surely couldn't have looked for me, right?

No, you're being stupid, why would he look for you? You're pathetic.

My conscience, that sounds very much like my ex-boyfriend tells me. I shook away my thoughts as I entered the school. I grabbed my books for 2nd period and hung around my locker until the bell went.

At least I missed math, my next subject was science which wasn't too bad. I made my way to science and sat down in my usual place at the back. Dustin, Cody and Jack walked in and sat with me at my table. To be honest, I had forgotten that Dustin shared this class with me.

"Hey Lexi" Jack greeted from his spot next to me. Dustin was on my other side and Cody was beside Jack.

"You ready for tonight?" Dustin asked.

I groaned, "ugh no, and thanks for reminding me. Oh yea, that means I have to leave early" I said the last part to myself while making a mental note.

"Why?" Jack asked, confusion evident on his face.

"Um, just a thing, don't worry about it. So I'll see you guys at five right?"

"Yep" Cody chimed in.

The teacher walked in and we all quietened down.

The lesson was quite boring, just note taking and the occasional life story from the teacher. Soon enough it was lunch and for once I wasn't hungry. It was probably because I didn't eat breakfast. (A/n Does anyone else get this? I get it all the time)

I walked into the cafeteria and sat down at Tami and I's normal table waiting for her to get back from the Food Place.

"Hey, you aren't eating anything today?" Tami asked from behind me.

"Nope, not really hungry"

"Okay, oh and good luck this afternoon"

"Ha, thanks I'm gonna need it"

She was about to reply when my phone started to ring. The contact name came up as Cade Matthews. I don't know why I kept his contact, but I did, and now he is calling. I internally panicked before trying to calm myself down. My curiosity got the better of me as I clicked the green answer button.

"Hello"

"Hey sunshine" Cade answers through the phone.

I ignore his nickname "What do you want?" I ask, slight venom lacing my tone. The boys sit at down at the table and shoot me curious glances as well as Tami who doesn't know who it is yet. If she did she would grab the phone from me and probably give him a piece of her mind. She doesn't know the full story though.

"Hey, hey, no need to get mad, I only want to talk"

"Well I don't want to talk to you"

"Then why did you answer your phone" I could hear the smugness in his tone. I scowled and gripped the phone tighter.

"Curiosity got the best of me, I'm already regretting it" I said through gritted teeth.

Everyone was still looking at me confused but I was staring intently at the table.

"Awe but sunshine why would you regret talking to me, I made you better" I pursed my lips together at the second mention of his nickname.

"Look ca-" I almost said his name, that would be a big mistake while I'm still on the phone, "what do you want?"

"I want you sunshine, I love you" this time I was beyond mad.

"You can't just say you love me, I haven't talked to you in two years and I am not your sunshine anymore" I say and hang up on him.

I sit there glaring at my phone until someone clears their throat. I look up and everyone's looking at me. The boys were all still wearing confused looks but Tami looked mad.

"Was that Cade" she spat the name out like something fowl tasting.

I cleared my throat, I really didn't want to deal with this right now, I'm going to have to talk to Selena in a bit and I have to prepare myself for that.

"Yes" I answered shortly, hoping that she'll drop it, no such luck.

"Why the hell do you still have him as a contact?"

I sighed dragging one hand down my face.

"I just never deleted him okay? Now drop it"

She didn't know the full story, she only thought she did. So, of course, she didn't drop it.

"You shouldn't have kept his number, or answered the call, I mean seriously it's not like he's going to change, like-"

I got angrier and angrier every word she said and I just lost it.

"YOU DON'T GET TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO. YOU AREN'T MY GUARDIAN. What I do or don't do with Cade is none of your business, you don't even know the whole story with him, I don't even know how you would react if you did. I also can't believe you think living on my own is so great, it's not, I don't have a family to come home to, I have a sister who only comes home when we have inspections. Do you know how lonely you can get in a huge house? Very. Don't say things you know nothing about and stop meddling in my business, now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go home early to see my sister"

Tami and the boys looked shocked, thank god I was talking too quiet for anyone to hear, all of it was true but I wish I hadn't told her in that way.

I got up from the table and headed toward my locker, ready to go home for the day. This day is already extremely stressful and unexpected, and it's only just the beginning.
