Kageyama arrives at his shift at the Wingless Crow at five minutes before six o'clock. He's been working here a couple of years, since he turned 21 and got disowned.

His immediate reaction to entering the bar is to scan the room for a familiar shock of red hair but he can't see it. Instead his eyes land on Kuroo, talking to Suga at the bar, and Daichi at the other end of the bar, wiping it down with a rag. Bokuto apparently isn't here at work yet (he's always late), and neither is Hinata, which is not common.

A slight panic rises in Kageyama's chest at the thought that maybe something is wrong with Hinata. Maybe he's sick or injured or something worse. He tries to stuff down the feelings and goes to the back room to shrug off his leather jacket and deposit it in his locker, saying his quiet hellos to his coworkers. He's dressed in jeans and a tight blue t-shirt that shows off his biceps. He's found that when you work as a bouncer, it doesn't hurt to show off your muscles just in case some drunk alpha gets it in his head to cause a scene.

By the time he comes back into the main room, he sees Hinata's familiar form across the room. He is smiling (because Hinata is always smiling) and talking to Bokuto, who must have also just snuck in. A wave of relief crashes over Kageyama at the thought that Hinata is fine. He was just worried for nothing.

He walks to his post, he has to pass by Hinata. He catches a subtle whiff of Hinata's honey scent but he can't smell much because of the scent blockers Hinata wears to work. It's dangerous for an unmated Omega to be in a room full of drunk alphas without scent blockers on. Kageyama understands but part of him really wishes that he could catch Hinata's full scent without the blockers. In fact, sometimes when he is lying in bed at night, he imagines what it would be like, to take in that sweet scent, to scent him with his, to hold him close and know that Hinata was his mate forever., Sometimes, okay a lot of times, he thinks about helping HInata through a heat or even marking him. He badly wants to. There's only one problem.

He really hasn't spoken too much to Hinata.

Tonight is no different, he walks by the bubbly redhead, close enough to catch that intoxicating hint of scent, and Hinata smiles wide and says "Hi Kageyama!" Kageyama is an idiot, he is socially anxious, so instead of engaging in conversation like normal people, he awkwardly returns the greeting with a soft "hey" and moves to his post by the door. He stands, arms crossed and makes sure patrons see him standing there, looking intimidating.

As he walks by, Hinata catches his scent of pine and freshly fallen rain, which he finds appealing, to say the least. The appeal of his scent juxtaposed with the awfulness of his personality has always confused Hinata.

Hinata says to Bokuto, "What's with him?"

"He's just not a big talker. But he's a good guy, really. He's just quiet and observant," offers Bokuto.

"Well," huffs Hinata, "he seems rude to me."

"He's not trying to be rude, I promise. That's just his way."

This is Kageyama's problem. Kageyama is bad with feelings, bad with people, bad with life.

Case in point, his family disowned him two years ago.

He had been promised for several years to a lovely, plump omega female named Akemi, but every time they met, he couldn't stand her or her sickening flowery scent. He knew he should be attracted to the sweet scent, but he wasn't and he didn't like her much once he got to know her. She was stuck up, talked a lot of gossip about people, and talked a lot about herself but never asked about him. She just assumed he'd be there to listen to whatever she had to say, to hang on her every word.
