The next Sunday, Shoyo and Tobio have the night off from work so they take the opportunity to have a family dinner with Shoyo's mother and sister.
Tobio has been sensitive all week to Shoyo feeling insecure and he's tried to tell him over and over, with words and actions, that he'll be there for Shoyo and he's not going anywhere. But tonight it is Tobio who is feeling insecure.
He is extremely nervous about this dinner, about meeting his boyfriend's family, about making a good impression. He is in front of his closet, staring at his wardrobe and trying to decide what to wear. He asks Shoyo if he should wear a tie, prompting a hearty laugh from his partner
"You don't need a tie, Tobi. It's just my family!"
"But I want to make a good impression."
"You will, by being you. Don't worry about how you dress."
"Well I am worried."
"Just look nice, okay. You don't want to wear sweats and a ripped t-shirt, but a nice pair of pants and a nice shirt are just fine. No tie needed. I promise we are not fancy people, okay? Since my dad left, we've had to make due with less. Mom doesn't make much money and she doesn't want Natsu to work so she can focus on school and hopefully get a scholarship to college. Not fancy. I swear."
In fact, even if Shoyo doesn't want to admit it, he is a little worried that Tobio will look down on their modest living arrangements. Who knows what Tobio is used to? His parents owned a company, it sounds like they were rich. He's sure Tobio grew up in a big house, with everything he could want, and maybe even servants. He'll have to ask him one day what it was like growing up. He files that away for a later date.
Tobio tries to take Shoyo's words to heart as he picks out a nice pair of pants and a plain blue shirt, but he is still anxious and fidgety. His fingers shake slightly as he tries to button his shirt and he tells himself it won't be as bad as he fears.
They leave Tobio's apartment and head to where Shoyo's mom and sister live. The apartment is in a middle class neighborhood, and when they enter, Tobio sees its small and modest. The tiny kitchen holds only a small four seater table. The living room is not much bigger and only sports a couch and a chair, a tv and a coffee table. There is not much room for anything else. Everything looks neat and clean, but the furniture is clearly not new. It only takes a quick glance around for Tobio to realize what Shoyo means when he says they are not fancy people.
But they certainly are warm. It is not hard to see why Shoyo is the way he is. Mrs. Hinata welcomes Tobio warmly with a big smile that immediately eases some of his anxiety.
"Kageyama-kun, so good to finally meet you!" she says with a wide smile that reminds him so much of Shoyo's. She has the same orange hair, the same brown eyes, and her looks being similar to Shoyo's somehow puts Tobio at ease.
"You too ma'am. Please call me Tobio." When he goes to shake her hand, he catches a whiff of the scent of peaches and cream. Ah, an omega. Like Shoyo.
"Please come in, we've been waiting on you two."
Shoyo's sister, Natsu, is in the kitchen leaning against the counter when they arrive. Again, same red hair, same brown eyes as her mother and brother. She smiles pleasantly enough at Tobio, though she seems a bit more wary and reserved than her mother.
"Hey bug," Shoyo says to Natsu. He goes up to give her a kiss on the cheek. "How are you doing?"
"Good," Natsu responds.
"How's school?"
"Pretty good."
"Keeping your grades up?"
