I'm sitting in some kind of cage, a metal cage. It's moving swiftly upwards and there's loud noises, like metal against metal. It seems to be a pretty rusty cage with a few crates and smaller cages placed within. It's dark so I can't make out what it is making noises in one of the small cages. I guess a kind of animal, it smells like one. The cage passes through a red, glowing light that seems to set off some kind of alarm.
Then the cage comes to a stop. I'm sent forwards and I land on my hands and knees. A sudden blinding light shines through as the doors are opening up. I see three people staring down at me. Two boys and a girl. A girl. I've never seen a girl before, well from what I remember. She's beautiful too. Long brown hair, down to her waist and bright green eyes.
One of the boys jumps down into the cage and helps me out. "My names Newt Greenie. This is Summer and that's Alby. Remember your name?" "No. No, why don't I remember?!" I stutter. "Its ok, it happens to us all, you'll remember soon." Summer tells me. I'm taken on a tour around the place they call the Glade. I'm told about the jobs, rules and I get few of my questions answered. They sit me down and get me food. "So how long have you guys been here?" I ask no one in particular. "10 months." Alby replies. "I thought you said they send someone up each month, shouldn't there be more of you?" I look around. "We lost a lot of men during the dark days." Alby says, staring off into the horizon. "Anyway do you have any idea what job you want? I mean if you want you can try them all out and see which you prefer." Summer smiles at me. "I want to be a builder." "Ahh, Strong are you?" She smirks. I smile a little. "Remember your name yet?" "Erm. Yea, it's Gally." I say.
Someone runs into the clearing, from outside the walls. "Who's that?" I ask, pointing in their direction. "That's Minho. His job is a runner." He comes, jogging past us. "Hey." he mutters as he then rushed into a concrete building.
"What do runners do?" I question. "They run, shuck face." Newt chuckles. "Yea, but what's out there?" "The maze." Summer tells me. "We've got three rules alright.
1: Everyone does their part.
2: Never harm another Glader.
3: NEVER go beyond those walls.
Only the runners can. Trust me when I tell you it's for your own good. It's not safe out there." Newt answers.
The night time falls the walls groan as they close shut and we go to sleep in our hammocks.-Next Morning-
I slowly open my eyes to see Summer lying next to me, playing with my hair. She hasn't noticed I'm awake yet. "Good morning." I whisper. She sits up abruptly in shock, causing the hammock to tip over; we fall off, her landing on top of me. We start laughing, just laying on the ground. We stare into each other's eyes for a moment. She rolls off me smiling and I help her up. "Why was you on my hammock in the first place?" I ask. "Oh. You was kicking around in your sleep. I guess you was having a nightmare, I just came to calm you down but you didn't end up waking up so...yeah. Besides your hair is really soft and now I know you still look cute when you sleep." She smiles at me. "Oh. Thanks." "You're welcome. You're really sweet you know Gally." she hugs me and unexpectedly gives me a small kiss on my cheek and walks away.
