You jumped a bit when you felt a hand on your shoulder and forced a quick smile for your aunt, not wanting to upset her any further, there were already enough clouds in the sky.

"Are you all right dear?"

"Yes, tía Pepa" you lied "Just shocked, I didn't think it would happen so fast" you laughed

Your aunt let out a nervous laugh too. It had taken everyone by surprise that Dolores told them about Mariano's proposal.

"It's a bit rushed, right?" the older woman said, playing nervously with her braid.

You clenched your fists tightly for a moment. You really didn't want to have to do this, you were tired and your head hurt. But you couldn't leave your second mother to her fate. So without saying anything, you gently took her hands, projecting a shield of calm on her.

You were Y/N Madrigal, the eldest daughter of Julieta and Agustín. Like your sisters and cousins after you, you had been blessed with a gift, in your case empathy. You could feel others' emotions and affect them. If someone had anxiety or depression, or a fit of rage, they would come to you to get rid of it, replacing it with calm and happier feelings.

In fact, you were quite similar to your mother in that sense: Julieta could heal any physical wound, you the emotional ones. That had made you the closest to your mother among your sisters. You always accompanied her into town, offering your own teas to those in need. It wasn't necessary, you could heal them just by touching them, but you didn't feel comfortable. You only healed your family with touches and kisses.

Especially your aunt. You had a strange relationship with the redhead: you loved her, no doubt, and saw her as a second mother. You were usually the one to calm her down if tío Felix wasn't around. But it hurt you to be near her.

You see, your powers might sound wonderful, but there was a counterpart. You could feel absolutely everything that the others felt, just as Dolores could hear everything. And just as your cousin could get overwhelmed, so can you. The difference was that Dolores had a way out.

She had a soundproof room where she could lock herself in to calm down a bit. And no one would say anything, knowing that her gift could be especially painful and respecting her space. But you couldn't afford a day off.

There was nothing in your room that could cure you, apart from a garden where you grew your plants for teas. There was nothing to suppress your power for a few hours, to allow you to breathe. And even if there was, it wasn't like you were allowed to rest. Like your mother, your powers were the most useful among all the family and although it was usually mom who attended emergencies, on many occasions you had to run through the whole town in the middle of the night to calm someone who was having a panic attack or something else.

There were emotions stronger than others and people who controlled them better or worse. For example, mom was always calm, always radiating serenity and love, you loved getting into her little bubble to rest a bit while cooking with her. Tía Pepa felt too much, there were so many emotions in her screaming to be released. They dug into your bones and it hurt to be near her. But you loved her, so you just smiled when she sighed in relief.

"Thank you, princess" she said, smiling at you

You just nodded and freed her hands, watching her go to sit next to your uncle, who looked at her with love and at you with gratitude.
