The smell was unfamiliar, it didn't smell like your usual sweet smell. It smelled like coffee and smoke. Turning over in bed, your mind flooded with the memories of last night. You gasped, sitting up. Swiss wasn't here. The room was empty, a few lamps still left on. It was quiet and cold, no traces of anyone. You looked over to your left, seeing a ripped out page. You picked it up, reading the note, getting up from the bed. It was still early in the morning, and you had to meet Papa soon. You folded the note, placing it in your pocket. Your shoes were left by the door, moved by Swiss. Slipping them off, you rushed out the door, meeting the same dark hallway. It was hard to navigate, but you held out your hands, reaching a door on the right wall. You opened it and were met with the hallway you had first met Swiss in. You looked both ways, deciding which way to go, running off the opposite way of the dead end. The hallways became more crowded again, and you looked for a clock, seeing it was 8 am. You had time to change into something more formal to meet Papa in. You quickly returned to your room, walking in and freshening up. It was another nice day, and you felt nervous for what Papa wanted to talk to you about.
It was a meeting in the main hall, where you both would walk to his office to run a few errands together. You and Papa caught up about your day yesterday and talked a bit more about the church. He told you that those rituals weren't common, and that it only happened when a new papa would take head of the church. Papa the Third told you all about the past Papas, who lived here in the church.
"Ah, about what I wanted to talk to you about," he turned around to look at you, "I have a job for you here, if you would like, a position as a nurse." You looked up from your feet, a nurse? You had never really had any experience with being a nurse, but you did take care of children at your old church before things went south. You had often taken care of and looked after children when there was a service. It was also the least you could do, he had taken you in and given you food, a home, and clothes. You agreed, and he seemed happy.
"I will, thank you, for all these opportunities." You both walked down a hall, towards the clinic, it wasn't big but there were already a few nurses. The same nurse that helped you the first night you were here walked from behind a curtain. She smiled, like she had been expecting you.
"This is Sister Rose, she's the head nurse in the church, and somewhere else in here is Sister Ash." Another girl wearing the same uniform as Rose walked out, much younger than the other. Her hair was a beautiful gray, and you were struck by her beauty, she looked much younger than you. Ash seemed to be around thirteen or fourteen, "Sister Ash was born in this church, she helps Ash around here." You nodded, locking eyes with Ash, and you smiled. She seemed a bit shy, hiding a bit behind the older nurse. You waved to her and she hid behind Rose even more. You thanked Papa and he left you to get settled in the clinic.
Sister Rose walked over to a cabinet, opening, "Here is your uniform, you can alter it however you'd like, Papa doesn't really mind. Your hours will be every Monday through Friday." You took the uniform from her, just a plain black nurses uniform. And a necklace the same as she was wearing. An upside down cross with the letter 'G'.
You stared at it, "A grucifix," spoke a small voice, and you looked up from the necklace to see Ash, "That's what the symbol is." You looked down, letting out a hum. You thanked her and she smiled in response. She seemed really sweet, she almost reminded you of your brother almost, besides all the shitty things he did. She sat down on one of the cots in the room, grabbing one of the books off of the dresser, swinging her feet. You looked around for a bathroom, wanting to change into the uniform. Finally, you found it and went inside to change into the black nurse dress, putting on the black head accessory. Lastly, you placed on the necklace, looking at yourself in the mirror, you had never thought that you would be a nurse in a church. After walking out and slipping on your shoes, Rose looked at you and smiled.
