Olivia stares at a very antique looking oil painting in fascination. Her eyebrows furrow as she stares at a familiar blonde figure. "Jaz?" She calls out.

Less than a second later Jasper stands at her side with an arm around her waist. "Yes, darling?"

"Is that Carlisle?" She questions, her voice full of confusion as she points towards the painting.

Jasper inspects the picture he, himself, had stared at many times before. "Yes it is."

"Who are those... men?" She turns to him. "This painting looks hundreds of years old and they're dressed like kings. I didn't know Carlisle was a kind, if he was then how has no one recognized him?"

Jasper lowly chuckles. "This was done hundreds of years ago and it's because they are like kings. Of our world anyways. Carlisle was not like them though." Before she can ask another question he begins to explain. "The Volturi are a very old and very powerful family."

"So they're like the Queen Elizabeth of your kind?" She tilts her head, trying to understand.

"Precisely." Jasper laughs to himself at her comparison but nods nonetheless. "They're what you might also call enforcers."

"Enforcers?" Olivia says to herself. "Of vampires? I didn't realize you guys had any rules."

Jasper swallows, though he physically had no need to, he felt like he did. "Only one."

Upon noticing his tense stature she places a hand on his forearm in hopes of some how comforting him. "What is it, Jaz?"

"To keep secret the existence of our kind." He looks into her eyes as he says this. Olivia's mouth props open and she gulps.

"So you could die?" She takes a step back, feeling slightly disgusted with herself at the thought of her being the cause of his death. "Because of me? Because my sister and I know?"

Jasper doesn't allow her the distance she tries to create and takes a step forward. "You don't understand that I'm only alive right now because of your existence, Olivia."

"What do you mean?" Olivia questions, trying to shake off all thoughts of Jasper dying.

"When Alice found me she propositioned me to come with her, to find the Cullens. I disagreed." He confesses.

"Why?" She scrunches her face up in disbelief. He had told her a summarized version of his past and how he came to be a vampire. But she didn't understand completely how she tied into this.

"I didn't want to live with myself after what I had done." He sighs as flashbacks fly through his mind. "But she convinced me that I had a mate that would be waiting for me some day. That would need me." He takes Olivia's hand and lands a chaste kiss on the top. "Enough of that, I believe everyone's waiting for us downstairs."
