Olivia lays in bed that night feeling restless. Usually she'd just take a sleeping pill to help aid her to sleep but she ran out a few nights ago. The nightmares had started again, and she was too paranoid that Edward, whom she knew was sneaking into her house at night to creepily watch her sister sleep, would be able to read her thoughts.
Although she knew he had already known her story there were still things, thoughts, she'd prefer to keep to herself.
The window opening grabs her attention and she realizes Jasper was now sitting on her windowsill.
"You never flinch." He states with a tense grimace. He didn't know why he said it, but it spilt out of his mouth.
"You don't scare me." She simply replies.
"How come you're not sleeping?" He changes the subject and takes a seat on the edge of her bed.
"I usually take sleeping pills but I ran out and have to find a way to get Charlie to buy me more." She admits with a shrug.
"Is that healthy for you?" He furrows his brows in concern.
"As long as I take the recommended amount there isn't a problem." She replies.
"And... do you?" He frowns unsure.
"I don't try to kill myself with sleeping pills if that's what you're asking me." She coldly says, her face falling.
Jasper sighs quietly to himself when he realizes his mistake and shakes his head. "I didn't mean to make you upset."
"It's fine." She rests her chin on her knees and looks the other way.
"You know how Edward could read your thoughts when you were... particularly vulnerable?" He speaks after a moment of silence. She nods her head wordlessly. "What if it's the same thing with me."
"What do you mean, Jasper?" She sighs in exhaustion. She didn't mean to sound like a bitch but she was so restless and irritable that she could hardly speak to anyone at the moment with out snapping.
"I know you're worried about having nightmares again, and I know you don't want Edward to be able to read into your thoughts again." He states staring at her intently. "Edward could only read your thoughts when you were in a bad mental state. If it''s the same with me, when you start having nightmares I can alter your emotions helping you sleep. I can change your emotions to something less negative and it might keep the nightmares away." He suggests.
Olivia ponders over it for a moment in her head. It could be beneficial, she doubted that it would be easy convincing Charlie to buy her sleeping pills when he never knew she was taking them in the first place. And the fact that she just confessed her suicidal thoughts to him not too long ago was also a factor.
"Can you handle it?" Her question surprises him.
"Handle it?" He questions slightly perplexed.
"Edward was going to let me die simply from getting a couple of seconds into my thoughts. What if my emotions get too much for you?" He almost smiled at the small amount of worry she allowed to pass through her voice but didn't want to make her shut down again.
"I'll be fine." He promises but she was still unsure. "I can handle it. I have decades of practice with feeling other's emotions. I also went through a war with my gift." He leaves no room for argument with a stern glance.
"Okay." She whispers and slowly starts to get comfortable in her bed.
She must have been exhausted because within minutes she was passed out.
Jasper was snooping around her room curiously when he suddenly felt a strong amount of pain. It wasn't sadness, or anger, it was this complex feeling of suffocating.
He almost loses his footing and it takes him a moment to realize this was Olivia's feelings he felt. Looking towards the bed he notices her stirring. Walking towards the bed he gently lays a hand on her cheek and begins to alter her emotions.
It was harder than he thought but he got the hang of it. And when she slowly relaxed back into her bed, a small smile appeared on his face. Happy that he could at least help her with something. His mate.
