As soon as Marcus entered the building, his mood visibly worsened.

Curiously, you watched him walk past everyone with his head lowered to call the elevator and hurriedly get in.

Silently you stood next to him, hands folded behind your back and eyes fixed on the door.

He kept his helmet tucked under his arm, his back straight and his chest out. He was really handsome, there was no denying that.

"You're tense.", you noted.

His lips curled but he answered nothing. When the door opened with a ping, he exited the elevator first, so fast it felt like he was trying to escape.

Wordlessly, you followed him down the long hallway, your eyes fixed on his broad cross. Every time he moved, the muscles in his back did too.

Suddenly he stopped.

His shoulders tensed and as you stepped to his side you could see out of the corner of your eye that the expression on his face had darkened further.

With almost hateful eyes, Marcus looked at the broad-shouldered man standing in front of him, dressed in a white suit. He had short, dark hair and the shadow of a beard that stood out against his tanned skin.

"Sheriff.", the man offered him a hand, but Marcus did not respond. "I see my idea was well received. (Y/N)."

He smiled kindly at you.

At his sight, your insides turned. Anger burned inside of you, mixed with the desire to punch that grin out of his face. But you couldn't help but give him a polite nod of the head.

"Jayce.", his name tasted bitter on your tongue.

He wasn't the kind of person you preferred to be around, but his research had played a big part in making sure you were by Marcus' side that day and not buried in the ground.

"It's actually Councillor Talis.", he corrected without paying attention to the dark gleam that lit up Marcus' eyes when you said Jacye's name.

Taking a deep breath, Marcus tried to remain calm. He hated Jayce, with his good-boy grin and attitude far too friendly and naive for this world.

"You two know each other?", he asked, looking at you with his brown eyes.

You shrugged.

"More or less.", you mumbled and exchanged a gaze with him to ensure that this wasn't a happy meeting.

"I see... Councillor Talis. You wanted to see me. Or is it a council matter?"

Jayce shook his head.

"I just wanted to check on you and your new partner. I see that things are going well?"

Again, you and Marcus glanced at each other.

"It's going fine.", you confirmed.

"That's a relief. I felt like you needed a helping hand, sheriff, since the investigations in Zaun are going rather slow."

As Jayce mentioned Zaun, Marcus grip around his helmet tensed.

It slipped Jayce attention but you did notice. Confused, you frowned but figured it was just a hit that his pride took.

"We're working on it.", you ensured. "But nothing falls from the sky."

"Besides...", Marcus cleared his throat. "Your suspicion is quite dangerous. We still have no solid evidence."

"It's definitely Silco.", Jayce insisted with a suddenly grim face.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"We need something solid before we can accuse him. Not to mention locking him up. It's no secret that Silco holds the Undercity together."

"And it's no secret that his drugs call into question the credibility of Piltover's trade and position of power."

Marcus mouth opened to respond something.

But before an argument could ignite, you jumped in.

"Councillor Talis, I have to agree with the sheriff.", you said calmly. "We can't just cut the head off the snake. That would throw us into chaos."

Jayce frowned.

"It has worked before. With Vander."

"That was because Silco took his place immediately. If Silco disappeared, there would be no one powerful enough to hold back the riffraff."

Marcus nodded.

"We would have to try to deal with him, find an agreement.", Marcus looked Jayce straight in the eye. "And if we want to get rid of him altogether, then we need a plan b."

Jayce's jaw clenched.

"So we're supposed to wait and watch him terrorize our citizens? Destroy our credibility? Make us a city of drugs?", he hissed.

You sighed. Your eyes met Marcus'.

"We will take care of the problem.", you assured. "But we need time."

"We don't have time."

"If we have it or not, we won't be able to make this magically disappear. If you want us to solve this then we need something to work with. And all you can give us at the moment is time. It's the least you can do after putting this burden on us."

Jayce frowned. It was obvious that he wanted to rant on about making life better and how things needed to change. But as he looked into the unamused faces of you and Marcus, he swallowed his complain.

"I'll let you handle this on your own then.", he said and turned away. "Every risk is yours to take. But I can't keep the council waiting for long."

You sighed.

"We will work on it.", you assured again.

Marcus nodded.

"We will assist you as good as we can.", he agreed and turned away.

After Jayce's steps vanished, Marcus rolled his eyes and let out an annoyed sigh before entering the balcony to catch some fresh air.

"Goddamn Hextech wonderboy!", he cursed and let his arms rest on the railing to look own on the streets of Piltover.

With just as much annoyance, you leaned next to him, but your eyes facing the door just in case somebody wanted to join.

"How incredibly naive he is.", you rolled your eyes.

Marcus sighed.

"Finally someone who agrees. He's just so..."

"Idealistic? Stubborn? A bit too absorbed in his childish believes?"

A light chuckle made Marcus' chest tremble. The expression on his face softened.

"You sound bitter.", he teased, looking at you.

With a soft grin, you let your head fall back and leaned dangerously far over the railing to let the cold breeze stroke your face.

Out of reflex, his hand wrapped around your arm. Just in case.

"The world we live in hates us.", you sighed but shrugged a second later. "But I suppose some annoying sparks of hope still survive to torture us with unrealistic wishes for the future."

Your gazes met.

He smiled softly.

"How miserable we are.", he said, chuckling.

"Hm, that indeed we are."
