Night was falling. As the hour grew later, the riots also became less, most people calmed down and returned to their neighborhoods.
On the part of Piltover, however, there were fewer problems than with the people who came from Zaun and depended on being able to get to the Topside for work.
Sighing heavily, Marcus squeezed his eyes shut and massaged the bridge of his nose.
"Report.", he ordered one of the enforcers. "How many casualties did the sides take?"
"Sir!", the enforcer saluted and with a nod of his head pointed to a spot where some white sacks were lined up. "About a dozen dead, mostly from the Undercity. One of our men died. We will have to investigate if the attacker is still alive."
Marcus swallowed hard.
"Shit...", he growled, and turned away to get a picture of the front.
In front of the floodlights, everything was silent. It felt as if not even the dead were present. The bridge lay empty and deserted before him. Only the sound of the river below filled his ears.
With a quick glance, he let his eyes wander over the enforcers. Most of them were tense, obviously expecting the worst. But there were also a few who appeared to be going about their business as usual.
"All right...", he muttered and turned to the troops. "Be alert and check everyone who tries to cross. No violence as long as it is not necessary. If they have permission, let them pass without any problems."
He was about to retreat, believing the night would save him some trouble, when suddenly shadows awoke in the distance.
Confused, he frowned and tried to see who was crazy enough to approach.
No one in their right mind would have pushed their luck and tried to pass after todays events. Especially not if it was someone from Zaun.
Cautiously, he retreated behind the barrier to watch what was happening. A faint premonition was already creeping up on him, but he would have preferred that it was just his imagination.
There were two people, a woman and a man, that much he could make out in the darkness. From the clothes she was wearing, it was easy to recognize her as a woman from Piltover.
As an enforcer.
But it wasn't her he was worried about. It was the stranger.
If he came from the Undercity, then he was a potential danger.
"Turn on the lights.", Marcus whispered to one of his men.
Bright white light flooded the darkness all at once.
Surprised and blinded, the two strangers flinched.
"Halt!", an enforcer raised his rifle.
Marcus stepped into the light.
The woman, young and with blue-black hair, reached into her pocket and pulled out an enforcer's badge to show him.
Marcus recognised her.
It was Caitlyn Kiramman, the girl that Silco had been most displeased about. She was the one that had pushed him into this shit by setting Vi free, pretending it had been Jayce's order.
"Sir, I have prove. Silco is behind everything!", she said, her eyes narrowed and the badge raised.
For a short, very short moment, he thought about letting the alarmed enforcer shot her. Just one bullets was enough to solve this misery.
But again, she was a Kiramman.
Her mother was not only one of the richest women of Piltover but also one of the mightiest, a council member. A well established one to add to that.
Slowly, he raised his hand to force the enforcer to lower his riffle.
"Retreat.", he ordered. "I'll handle it."
The man nodded and walked back behind the floodlights.
Slowly, Marcus walked towards her. He did not recognise the young man she was with, about her age, a person of colour with white locks. But he had a strange suspicion that he wasn't a stranger either.
The sceptical look in his eyes told the sheriff that he had dealt with the law before.
"Show me.", Marcus was surprised about how raspy and tired his own voice sounded.
The two exchanged a gaze.
"No!", the boy whispered.
But Caitlyn nodded.
Hesitant but willing to make the necessary sacrifices, he cursed and pulled out a strange kind of portable safe. As he twisted the top and bottom at the same time, the side jumped open to reveal a blue orb inside.
The blue light that it spread made Marcus take in a sharp breath.
"(Y/N)...", he whispered, barely audible.
Taking a deep breath in, he came one step closer. He had to sigh, a grim expression on his face.
It was not a matter of how he would be able to get out of this mess but if. This little orb was something that Silco would have sacrificed a lot for. It could have been a great opportunity to blackmail him into letting Marcus go. And if not, it could be of use to you.
Either way, Marcus needed it. More than anything.
With a quick grasp, he pulled his pistol.
Struck by surprise, the boys eyes widened.
But before he got hit by the shot, he managed to close the safe again. Gasping, he crashed to the ground and remained still. Marcus turned to Caitlyn, his pistol pointed at her. He had no other choice but to get rid of her too.
The other enforcers started moving.
With horror and surprise mixed in her eyes, she raised her hands.
Slowly, he bend down to grab the safe from the boy.
Unsure, Marcus looked around. His hands were shaking. This felt so wrong, so bad. But he had to do it.
There was no other way. Not for him.
Not if he wanted his own happy ending.
"I told you to leave this alone.", he hissed.
But his finger hesitated on the trigger. He was shaking like he never did before.
Suddenly, the darkness was filled with hundreds, thousands of green lights. Like a swarm of firelights, they filled the air.
Confused, he frowned, trying to shut the sounds out that they were making. But as one of them landed on his pistol, he froze in surprise.
This wasn't a bug.
It was a bomb.
The wings spread, activating the trigger with a click.
