So this was it, the end.
All the thoughts that crossed his mind made Marcus think what an ass he had been. It made him regret, made him suffer. Many things could have been prevented if only he had made better decisions about life.
And yet, his thoughts always returned to his daughter.
"Ren...", he whispered, a tear in his eyes. "(Y/N)... I love you. Both of you."
The words got swallowed by the deafening sound of the explosions. Like green fireworks they filled the darkness, gave the impression that someone was celebrating rather than killing dozens of people.
And maybe they were. Maybe they were celebrating the power they had, the destruction they were able to cause.
The deaths.
His death.
With his eyes wide open Marcus watched the lights that devoured everything like a monster from which there was no escape.
All he could see was brightness.
All he could feel was horror.
But in this world of light and death suddenly awoke a blue flash. It appeared all at once, as if from nowhere, born to disappear again.
Your face appeared before him.
The sight made his heart beat faster. A soft smile lit up on his face as he closed his eyes and accepted his fate.
"(Y/N)...", he whispered. "Take good care of Ren for me."
But it wasn't a hallucination that his doomed mind had created.
Suddenly, arms wrapped around him.
Surprised, Marcus tore his eyes open. But all he could see was light. Light and noise struck him. Like the waves of the ocean they crashed down on him.
With full force he was torn from his legs. His back hit the railing of the bridge. He thought he could feel the heat of the explosions stroke his skin.
Death tickled the back of his neck.
But when the lights faded and the outlines of the cities reappeared in the darkness, he was still breathing. His chest rose and fell, his eyes skipped across the bridge.
Bodies.
Bodies everywhere.
But he wasn't one of them.
Confused, he looked to Caitlyn. With a bloody leg, she tried to drag herself out of the light, panting, but stopped to look to the side when she realized he was still alive. At first she was confused. Then her gaze wandered lower and her eyes widened.
Without looking, Marcus let his hands wander down his body. Something heavy pressed down on him.
When his fingers touched soft hair, he winced.
Suddenly he felt cold. So infinitely cold.
"(Y/N)?", he hardly dared to say your name.
Breathing heavily, you swallowed. The taste of blood was on your tongue while thick, red threads dripped from the corners of your mouth.
You felt weak. As if every breath cost more than it was worth.
"She deserves... more...", you gasped as the feeling of warm blood danced down your spine. "Mar... cus..."
A whimper escaped his lips.
His hands continued to moved downward. Glassy splinters dug into his skin.
The hextech orbs. They were broken, shattered into millions of little pieces.
Desperately, his arms tightened around you while tears burned in his eyes.
"(Y/N)...", he whispered. "Stay... stay with me!"
His fingers clawed into your shoulder.
But all you could feel was him moving under you. The world went black before your eyes. Pain merged with burning air in your lungs and the taste of blood in your mouth.
Hastily Marcus reached for the safe with the blue orb.
But Caitlyn grabbed the strap and tugged on it.
Immediately, his gaze turned icy cold. Full of rage, he glared at her.
"Let go!", he growled. "You owe it to me, after you caused all this shit with your selfishness."
She hesitated.
"You're working for Silco.", she gasped.
"And I'll tell him to kill you, brat, if you don't let go of this orb!"
Startled, she let go.
As quickly as possible, Marcus wrapped the strap around his arm and pulled you closer. As he noticed how little you reacted to his movements, his heart almost stopped beating. He shook you, but stopped as you did not respond.
With his eyes locked on Caitlyn, he pulled himself off the ground.
"Think of me what you want, but I've never put the cities balance on the line to prove my own worth.", he said before letting himself fall over the railing. "Spoiled, rich brat."
The water welcomed him with a cold embrace. His arms wrapped more tightly around you. It felt like you could disappear forever if he squeezed even a little less tightly.
When he opened his eyes, your blood danced in front of his face. Like red petals, the threads filled the dark water, painting a picture of death and pain.
A last, blue sparkle seeped from your spine. Then everything went dark.
Squeezing his eyes tightly shut, Marcus had to force himself to keep calm. His heart was racing, his thoughts were making him go crazy.
As his head broke through the surface again, he had to check if you were still breathing.
As quickly as he could he dragged you through the water back to the safe port.
Blood and water mixed on the white stones of the stairs while he took you into his arms and carried you through the streets as fast as his legs were allowing him to.
Thick drops of blood marked the way, from the port up the stairs and towards the plaza in front of the council building.
"Stay alive...", he whispered over and over again as if it could keep death away. "Please... stay with me... you have to... stay. You can't leave me now... not after I got everything I've ever dreamed of. (Y/N)!"
But as he arrived at the council buildings entrance, he hesitated. The air was burning inside his lungs. He was exhausted, his entire body was shaking.
This wasn't the right place. He needed to go where the root was sitting.
Clenching his teeth, he turned on his heel and rushed into the opposite direction.
This was a matter of Hextech. He needed a scientist, not a doctor.
And there was only one devil in this entire hellhole that knew everything about it.
