K A T A R A

I watch as Leo's mother sits in the family room seeming very relaxed as she amusingly watches Gavino play with Chantel whilst knitting something in her lap.

She must be very skilled at knitting because she isn't even looking at it and getting it done quick.

I walk in there direction and Gavino stops what he's doing and says, "Buona sera Kat!"

(Translation: good evening)

I smile in his direction and reply back with, "Buona sera Gav, hope you're enjoying yourself!"

He smiles back at me and says, "Sì! I love it here!"

Mrs. Romano laughs at her sons behavior and she looks towards me and says, "You look beautiful as always Katara, please, sit."

I smile and do and internal dance in my head at the compliment and say, "My beauty doesn't compare to yours Mrs. Romano."

She blushes and says, "Oh stop it."

I giggle and say, "I wanted to take this chance of me not being able to leave the house to get to know you more! Leo has told me so much of you and how strong of a woman you are and I would love to hear anything you have to tell me."

She smiles at me and it makes me feel all warm inside because it's such an inviting smile. It reminds me of the warm feeling you get when its Christmas time.

"So what would you like to know Katara?"

I think and say, "I want to know what living in Italy is like."

She smiles at the thought and says, "I love my motherland. It's a beautiful place to be able to live in."

I've always wanted to go to Italy, it's been on my bucket list since the 5th grade when I got jelly that one of my classmates got to spend weeks near the beach in Italy and even showed pictures to the class and from that day on, I wanted to go to Italy so badly.

She sighs and says, "I just hope one day Leo will want to officially move back, you'd love Italia, I just know it!"

I frown and ask, "He doesn't want to go back?"

She slowly starts knitting again and shrugs her shoulders and says, "I believe my son doesn't know what he wants. Some days he'll reminisce of Italia and speak on how he wishes to be back at home but then I think his past holds way too memories in Italia that he doesn't want to confront quite yet."

I nod understandingly and say, "You got that right, he doesn't know what he wants a lot but something I've noticed with him is that when he really wants something he'll put up a fight for it."

Mrs. Romano smiles and says, "So how much did you make him fight for you?"

We both laugh and I say, "Quite a bit but I can say now that I'm glad I gave him the chance, your son is one of the best things that's ever happened to me."

She smiles up at me and says, "If he doesn't make you my daughter-in-law soon then I will officially lose all faith in my son."

I smile at the thought of potentially becoming his wife and say, "Fingers crossed, but for now I think we are good where we are at."

Of course I'd love to hopefully marry Leo but we've barely learned how to be in a relationship with each other, plus, with the whole mafia war thing I think marriage is the last thing on everyone's mind.

Gavino speaks up and says, "Mama, are we still going out for ice-cream now?"

She smiles at him and says, "Yes Gavino, go get your shoes on." He smiles happily and eagerly goes to get his shoes.
