"Pryor? Pryor your friends are here to pick you up. Aren't you dressed yet young lady?" It's time. The day I'm been waiting for all week is finally upon us.
"Yeah mom, I just need to find my other boot. Tell Lila to wait a few seconds more, please." Hearing the huge sigh from outside my door, footsteps creep towards the stairs until it becomes faint. I lied, my boots, my hair, make-up and present are all ready to got except for me....emotionally.
My stomach feels tight like a thousand pound weight was roped around my waist. Come on Pryor you can do this I keep telling myself that over and over again as goose bumps roll up my arms. Crap, Lila is so totally going to kill me for stalling. She knows this is big for me, Jonah's going to ignore me for the rest of high school if I don't go to this party. He means something to me, alright. There's no technical reason except this bond we share. Whether he senses it or not, there's a red string tied around our fingers. If not for him, my heart would be made of pure stone. He set me apart from all the other girls in the school, why? I'm no different from a regular sophomore student besides I don't crowd the case that he finds something fascinating about me. Could it be my body? My streaky long hair? Or maybe something no one else can see?
Yeah right.
There's nothing special about me and trust me there never will be.
Crawling outside the doorframe with a plain black present bag in one hand and a purple hand bag in the other, I waltz down the staircase curdling down the nervous feeling twisting inside of me. No one is blocking the door with a camera or a tear in their eye (mom usually). Ellie must have let an hour ago, her room was closed when I came around the corner and the usual strawberry body lotion she puts on everyday morning and afternoon lingers behind the last hallway on my right.
"You'll be fine, Pryor. Stand nice and tall and try to blend in with the crowd." I tell myself that but the truth is just plain and simple. The party's supposed to be epic or so Miranda told me yesterday after we left Daphne's store. Lila had invited 90% of the whole school including Devan and his rude ass girlfriend, Terra. Except she hasn't really bothered with me lately this days. Most times when we past each other in the halls she's talking with a small group of friends or pretending I don't exist. Doesn't really bother me as long as she doesn't try to start something with me first is all. Though back to my problem with Jonah.
How does Lila expect me to talk in front of him with all the beer and whisker at the party? What if he gets drunk and tries to pull a fast one on me? What then, run away? Pretend that the whole night never happened and play things off as a friend basis? No! I would so reap myself if it came to that. This is the first time a guy who wasn't obvious with my feelings for him actually takes me seriously. Side kisses on the cheek mean absolutely nothing unless the guy is willing to press his lips to yours. I want to feel every part of him. For him to caress my face with his warm, creamy hands. I want to look deep into his emerald green eyes and smooth my hands through his thick black hair. The more his gorgeous smile keeps blinking in and out of my head the more it screamed 'just rape him already.'
Hailing the front door open, a loud thump coming from the kitchen gives me even more chills. "Pryor," mom says in her sweet accent voice before gripping my hand in hers. Oh here we go again. Tears run down mom's rosy cheeks messing up her perfectly good mascara and eyeliner. "Mom...." I start but she hails me in for a tight hug around the neck. Her minty breath heats against my bare skin as a familiar aura feels me with guilt. Why does it feel like I'm abandoning them somehow? My parents were going out on their first official date since the move and this is what I get. "Have fun and call me if anything get's out of hand, ya hear me?" Wiping the tears away, I grin at my mom and move in to place a kiss on her cheek. "Promise. See you at eleven."
